Thank you, and I'm aware of the site. After starting to work on my set I got curious to see if anyone else had ever done it. That I know of there are currently five people in the world, including myself, who have made chainmail chess sets. All but one of them are very unique. But I did come across one set that was clearly a rip off of the set you are referring to.

(jaw drops) that is so cool! did you do all the pawns too? what's the board going to be made of?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImrikDragon In reply to PurlyZig [2010-07-22 23:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Yes all 32 pieces are completed. The board will be made of stone and inlayed into a wood table which I'll be building this coming semester. I would be working on it this summer, but the studio on campus is under construction till mid august.

The Chess pieces and table are just the beginning of the project though. I also have two chairs which are almost finished to go with the table. Once those three pieces are finished I'll be starting two life sized sculptures of the greek gods Dionysus and Apollo to sit in the chairs playing chess.

Wow, I've seen a LOT of chainmail, but I've never seen a chainmail chess set. This is very original and creative, I like it. Have you made a chessboard to go with it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImrikDragon In reply to j-alex-darr [2010-03-21 17:20:56 +0000 UTC]

I had started a chanmail board to go with it, but didn't get very far due to the end of the class I was making it for. Ultimately I decided to give up on the chanmail board and instead make a stone board which will be inlayed into table I'll be making later this year.

Just thinking it'd be awful to have this gorgeous set then get whipped when you play (Which would be me, I don't have the patience for chess.)

Dear Sir, your work is amazing, incredible and absolutely beautiful! I am honored to come know you.

I have just started making chain mail about 6 months ago and strive for your level of experience.

Once again I am honored.

Thank you, I'm flattered, but honestly I'm not all that experienced. I've only been doing chainmail for a little over a year now.

wow! that is amazing! it is such a good idea too! i have always been interested in chain mail for a while but i have only tried to make a couple of pendants. how do the pieces stand up by themselves?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImrikDragon In reply to bree-turner-art [2009-11-11 22:24:05 +0000 UTC]

You have to create tension between the rings. Instead of the rings having extra space to move freely, some of the rings need to be completely filled by other links.

angelstears1984 [2009-11-05 05:40:22 +0000 UTC]

how are you going to do the board?
What gave you the inspiration for this?
Id like to do chainmail but I just never got into it
I think I would need someone to show me how
I mean I know how to construct it
But the patterns and such
anyways

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ImrikDragon In reply to angelstears1984 [2009-11-05 12:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

The board is being done in dragon scale and is going to have a Celtic knot running through it.

The original idea was to make a chess set out of sheet metal and have it be Final fantasy themed, but as I was drawing up the plans I realized that was way more soldering than I wanted to do. Only way I saw to get around this was to make them in chainmail. But as you can clearly see these are not FF themed. After three failed prototypes of trying to make one of the characters, I decided I wasn't quite good enough for that project yet and that I should make a classic set first as practice.

I can't either. I wasn't all that excited about the board before, but now that I've got it started it looks even better than it did in my head.
