ACK!! Drawing Number Two for me!! This was originally going to be my submission to the Time Flies contest, but it's over, meh.

ANYwho, I think my favorite aspects of this piece are Good Chase and Jack's hands and the clouds. Those turned out better than I expected!

I tried to get across a lot about the relationship between these guys with symbolism, first of all, and I apologize if it seems too cliche or trite. At first I wanted to have the bonsai tree behind Good Chase and Jack but that disrupted the flow of the piece too much and put all the happy colors on one side and the darker colors on the other. And since this piece is called "Connected" that would be kinda counterproductive... So, I kept it as is. I also wanted to emphasize that they are connected by showing (symbolically) that each version of Jack and Chase has aspects of the other within them, which is why each version's respective settings (the lair and the tree) appear to be mismatched.

Quick note about bonsai trees: in China, where bonsai trees originated, people would originally try to grow them so that their trunks resembled the twisting and turning bodies of serpents and dragons and other fantastical creatures of myth and legend. So, in that sense, I drew the bonsai tree to capture Chase's inner dragon and give it a majesty of sorts. Not sure how much I achieved that, that's for viewers to decide! Anyway, when the bonsai tree was grown in Japan it symbolized instead harmony and peace, and in this sense can be seen to symbolize the harmony of Good Jack and Chase's relationship together.

I tried to make the connection in the middle the most obvious. Each Chase and Jack is literally connected in some way to everyone else. Good Chase's hair is connected with Evil Jack's coat, Evil Chase is the one conjuring the light in the center, and Good Jack is holding Good Chase's hand. YAY SYMBOLISM!

This also is supposed to demonstrate a little bit my interpretation of Chase's relationship with Jack. Canonically, I don't believe there is any romance between Evil Chase and Evil Jack. Their relationship, I believe, only consists of disdain, rejection, and empty idolatry. The reason I love them so much is because Jack Spicer is easily the only person who can get under Chase Young's skin so effortlessly. He annoys him so easily that Chase wants to kill him just so he doesn't have to put up with him anymore. That, I think speaks of Jack's talent for being noticed, and a little bit of susceptibility on Chase's part to Jack's antics. From there, I think, it's not too much of a stretch to say that the two could develop something given time, patience, and a lot of trial and error. Good Chase and Jack are the ones who have figured out their compatibility and have acted upon it.

In this picture, Evil Chase is supposed to be looking at Good Chase and Good Chase is looking at Good Jack, and Good Jack is looking at Evil Jack, while Evil Jack is looking off into the middle distance dramatically (or any other way you want to interpret) trying to plan out his hostile takeover so that he can finally prove himself and achieve the validation he so craves. In this context, Evil Chase understands that Jack can easily push his buttons; he understands that there's a connection in that sense, but he's VERY set against doing anything about it, hence his aggressive stance. It's as though he's trying to fend off the version of himself who has given in to those feelings. Evil Jack is just oblivious and trying to be naively evil.

If you have ANY disagreements with what I have said, then go ahead and disagree! This is my artwork, but the interpretation of it belongs completely to WHOEVER WANTS TO INTERPRET IT!! If everything that I have just said rings completely false to you, then go ahead and ignore it!

And besides, I don't own the characters (disclaimer), so it's a given that every single interpretation of their relationship is valid.
