Description
Drawn for 's Zutara Week.-FRIDAY-
"Mythology"
A.k.a. "Shameless Stylistic Appropriation, Part II", or What I (like to) Think Would Happen If Amano Yoshitaka Was An Avatard.
First, apologies. Sorry for falling behind on the Zutara Week prompts! I was miserably sick all of Friday, and spent Saturday recovering and then going out to Takikawa for much-needed summer shopping. Please accept this ridiculously elaborate sketch as my penance.
As soon as I saw "Mythology" as a prompt, I thought of Amano Yoshitaka and his magnificent watercolors and oils, with their strange, floating dreamscapes and elegant beings levitating amongst swirls of color.
My previous attempt to recreate his style is thumbnailed in my dA icon. Here's my second completed try. I can only hope it even begins to measure up to the master, though I doubt it...
And it was just like the sun
But more like the moon.
A light that can reach it all...
So when you say forever,
Can't you see you've already captured me.

I can't decide whose prettier, Katara or Zuko.
It's a tough call, cause even with the scar Zuko is ridiculously pretty.

Actually, it's based on the work of Yoshitaka Amano, a Japanese artist who borrows a lot from the woodblock print and scroll painting traditions of Japan! ^_^

Oh, I love it! It is graceful, and the colors are subtle but bright... if that makes sense. It looks... heavenly.

I'm glad! I love Amano's work, and it's been a strong influence on my own personal style (you don't see it often in this gallery, since I'm usually trying to imitate the styles of different series, but it peeps through sometimes)...

The composition on this piece is great! I love Zuko's expression, and I think the colors you utilized were interesting. Most Zutara pieces emphasize vibrant reds and blues, so it's nice to see some experimentation with a different pallate.

Thank you very much! I guess Zuko's expression is...deviously smirky? (Come to think of it, where on earth has his hand wandered off to?)
Amano does work in bright primaries sometimes, but I wanted to do something more along the lines of his dreamy pale watercolors. It was fun to play around with--I'll have to do it again sometime.

Well, Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon is almost unbelievably Zutara, if you can smile and ignore the fact that the couple who sings it end up marrying somebody else and committing suicide, respectively... XD
