could you explain the purpose of the shape layer...
furthermore, i guess you use a tablet.
i tried it but it seems very hard to control the thickness of the brush since you have to push down harder in order to get the brush size bigger but the draw back is that the brush also gets less opacity.. if you know what i mean..

I use that shape layer because (it doesnt show up that much in this one) it lets you basically show the white more when you put white on it
