Description
Another western piece. The poker game that descends into a brawl is a classic staple of any saloon worth its whiskey. I had a bit of difficulty with what to put on the guy throwing the punch, because I wanted to show off his arms but I didn't want him barechested. So he ended up wearing just a vest, which (along with the leather arm bands) probably makes him look a bit like Crocodile Dundee with a six-shooter on his leg.I feel kinda bad for the dealer, but he was probably in on the cheat.
I wanted it to look like the chair under the guy taking the punch had smashed beneath him from the violence of the blow, but I think it probably reads poorly. I should have had it bursting into the foreground more, but there wasn't much room at the bottom of the illustration. Oh, well, something to learn.

Incredible line art... Love the shading on the clothing. I think you were right to leave off the sleeves, I can't imagine it being half as dramatic otherwise. Still... I wonder how that guy's leg got all the way up there...?

the only thing that seems odd is that the puncher is grabbing the guys shirt, it doesnt seem natural considering how the punch played out.
also kind of convienent how aces would obviously be the card to cheat with and happen to be the easiest to draw.

I love your shading, and how you capture the raw violence that would have occurred in the same situation in real life. Love it.
Also, I saw the chair break under the sheer power of that punch. So, for me, you achieved what you sought out to. Thanks a lot for this, I enjoy it. Keep up the good work.

Naw. Start out with a rough drawing and then just keep refining the shapes and adding details... then draw clean over the rough and it looks all nice.

wow this is an amazing drawing i love it i sat here for about 5 minutes just looking at it to see all the little details and thing, so much action in one shot it would look awesome in colour i think it might help to better see all the detail and stuff

It's just about making rough structure sketches before you put in the precise linework, and then concealing that underlying structure in a variety of ways. Sorta like building a house, you only see the outside but there's a lot in the walls that holds it up.

You mean as a job? I get to do it occasionally as part of my animation work, but it's not something that I find is generally a "career" position... rather "character design", at least in games and such, gets folded in with other production positions, or is farmed out to freelancers. I wish I could just do character design work all the time, but it doesn't seem likely.

Wonderful style you have. I love how you drew the man's clothes being pulled from his body after he was shot. The chair-smash situation is a little hard to grasp, though.
