Description
Another from Scroll of the Monk, the recently released supplement for White Wolf's Exalted RPG. This one actually took two tries... it illustrates an ability in which the character concentrates and sees the myriad futures beyond their next move.The character is one of the series named entities; Ahn-Aru, Sad Ivory, Chosen of the Maiden of Endings. Unfortunately I only had one image (from the main gamebook) to use as a design reference, but I think I did all right. I wish the tone artist had taken the time to do the same, 'cause he might have seen that the front part of her hair is white (hence the delineation line you can see in the pencils).
Aside from that error, I think the tones make it look pretty smooth. Credit those to Jeff Simpson.
The initial sketch was drawn in red pencil, same as usual, but for some reason I only have the greyscale version on file. Check out the Scraps for some of the designs that went with the initial version of this same illustration.

i dont mean to undermind the tone artist experieence and expertiese, and puting aside char reference issues, i think Jeff's style kinda took your work a step back...
Let me see if i can explain what i mean ... to my oppinion, he exagerates textures.. it makes it unnatural in contrast with ur lines

Beats me, I was just following image reference. I didn't paint the greys, though, and I expect that it was probably supposed to be a white circle, but nobody told Jeff.

I doubt it was supposed to be a white circle. Sids castemarks are the symbol of the maiden in question. Therefore, an endings caste should have the symbol for saturn on her brow.

Check the later pages of the core rulebook (not sure which edition they passed on to me in PDF form) to find the character in question and the reference image. I'm not sure what page it's on, but it's in the back half of the book. She's named in the Comments up there.
I don't know enough about the series to know what's right or not... I wish I'd had more references for the character than a single, not particularly clear illustration. It's also one of the problems with subcontracting... I can't ask the art director directly, I have to ask the agent who asks the editor who asks the art director who might have to ask someone else, and then the information has to filter back again down to me. Usually this just ends up getting lost, and the little details like this tend to suffer for it.

Not really... I don't have anyone that I interact with regularly to use as a basis for comparison, except for those people I interact with online (which is probably one reason I spend so much time on the internet), so it's hard to guage where I actually stand. I guess I'm pretty good, but there's a LOT of people who are much, much better, and to compete I have to keep trying to meet the bar they set. At this point, I judge myself "good enough to work, but not good enough to get rich off it".

Well, you're also 14, and I'm nearly 31. Those 15 years of steady, dedicated practice make a difference. I'm of the mind that most anyone can draw well with practice and the right environment where you can draw a lot. So long as you're drawing every day, it's hard not to get better, even if it happens veeerrrrrryyyy slowly.

Coloring looks odd.. too photoshop-ish..needs to be more refined. The middle characters shoulders look too small in relation to her head.

Wow, my favourite might be the top one in the sketch/gesture stage, there's so much energy in the pencil lines. The shading was done beautifully, though pity about the hair.

I just picked up Scroll of the Monk last night. I am flipping through it checking things out when, lo and behold, I see your art. Out, frikken, standing. They couldn't have picked a better person to convey Exalted than yourself. Thank you for your talent.

hmm, the tone looks a little wierd.. the figure just to the left of the main has a strange shadow from her hair down to her nose. and the main figure's breats, and the space between them, just looks really off.. like her chest sucks in there or something - doesn't look quite right.
lines look good. hehe, i like that little ass-ilouette on the right.

These were really rough overall... for whatever reason, that's what the MESS director told me to do, so that's how I did it. Personally I dig clean inks, but I aims to please.
