Description More fanart for Brandon Sanderson's "Mistborn" trilogy, from Tor books, the text largely says it all. This started out as a little loosen-up doodle that got complicated on me. Click "Download" to check it out a little larger.

I confess, I did not do the proper research (going back into Book 2 and pulling out all the Koloss descriptions), but rather relied on memory and the impression I recalled from reading the book. Hopefully I didn't get it too wrong.

-EDIT-

So actually, I got it pretty wrong on a couple points. The current version now more accurately reflects the skin color (a deep blackish-blue rather than a pale blue) and their proper size ratio. That'll teach me to do my reading first. *sigh*

Little less than an hour on the sketch, and then maybe two on the paints and layout. The text is pulled from the Glossary in the back of the second book (wherein these guys appear) and paraphrased from characters within the main text. All done with the Intuos 9x12, lines Manga Studio EX and paints/texture in Photoshop CS2.

All content ©2007 Brandon Sanderson. Let it not be said that fanart serves no purpose... it's easier now than ever before to get your work seen by authors, and if you show the right skills that can lead to nice things.

This is practically exactly how I imagined them! This is great!

Thank you!

This was actually one of the first Koloss designs I ever put down, back when I was doing it as fan-art, actually. I didn't work on the books or the game until much later, but I think there I've nailed it a bit closer.

Like, here and especially here

And I think I was consciously trying to avoid Big Damn Sword tropes at first, with the Mature Koloss and his blade, but then I got to know Brandon better and realized a tropey Big Damn Sword was exactly what was needed.

These guys were so creepy! I loved the detail with the loose to tightly stretched skin. I imaged them very much like these. This is a great drawing showing them. I love the for scale guy's expression, he's all grrreeaaat... can I go now?

Thanks! I should put the ones I did for the RPG up, they're much more accurate (I think).

Thanks! I've updated it since then with the versions that appear in The Mistborn Adventure Game, which I think hit the nail pretty hard.

I like how the human looks scared.
I think the Koloss only have one type of sword, though.

Inkthinker In reply to Generality [2012-07-28 00:42:27 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember if it's ever made particularly clear where they get their weapons. I'm pretty sure they come in different sizes at least, and other than being described as crude slab-iron blades there's not a lot of description.

This is my first and oldest illustration of them, and if there's one thing I did entirely wrong here it's those swords (both of 'em). I've done several more koloss illustrations since that are more accurate. They appear in The Mistborn Adventure Game, and now that it's come out on the shelves I'll have to see if I can get some more pieces up online.

There's an existing tabletop RPG from Crafty Games, and a videogame licensed by Little Orbit (not sure when the release date is). There's also a film version being pitched for production now by Paloppa Pictures.

It's definitely a favorite of mine. Four books out so far, and more to come!

I should really replace this with (or at least upload) the new illustrations of Koloss I've done for the RPG. Much more accurate.

Hah! No need to pay me, pay Crafty Games! Buy the Mistborn Adventure game when it comes out later this month. I've drawn a whole lineup of Kandra in several forms (including truebody).

Very well done work... but when I was understanding the book right, the skin of the little ones hangs down widly, so you can see the muscles of thorax on the sides an the muscles of the chin, too. Almost everywhere of the body.
And they do have red eyes

These illustrations are far out-of-date... the more recent designs in the Adventure Game are closer to what you describe.

How did you get the muscles like that? The whole "draw what you see" method of drawing muscles doesn't work on... something like that.
Nice work and drawing skill
Hear about the movie based on mistborn in the works?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to eleven-points [2010-04-17 05:19:02 +0000 UTC]

The license for the film has been bought, I know, but I haven't heard much about development past that. I keep an ear open for it, though.

The muscles here are pretty fudged, but I find that "draw what you see" is a lot more complicated than it sounds. What I usually do is keep reference that shows muscle groups and basic anatomy near to hand when I'm working. Then I try to draw what I want to see in a very rough sketch form, and check it against the reference (if I'm being smart), and correct as needed with more sketching over the top of what I've already done. It's only when I'm confident that I know where I want the final lines to go that I try to make a clean drawing of it.

With enough practice, you get a memory for which muscles go where and do what, and how they're shaped and how they connect to each other, and you can work with the reference in hand less and less. But it takes a LOT of practice and it takes a lot of mistakes before you get to that point.

I think so too. These won't be the last pictures I draw for a Sanderson book, he's very good at sparking my visual imagination.

Haha... I wonder if Brandon knows that. Maybe that's why he added the extra "s" at the end, but I don't think it helps.
