Description
Spit this out earlier tonight. Last night I was on a Spidey kick (check the Scraps) and was thinking on how Spidey holds that slender little thread of webbing... realistically, if you've ever tried to grip something like that, you know it's a pain. If his webbing was sticky on his hand, then how does it unstick when he lets go? So I figure he uses a wrapping grip. Then I figured I'd toss out a little loop in easytoon. This took about an hour or so, I think. The weight of his swing isn't perfect, but I think it works all right.-EDIT-
I am such an idiot... Spidey holds that thin little thread the same way he sticks to the wall. It doesn't matter how hard it would be for a regular person to hold it, he's Spider-Man... his spider-grip holds it, his spider-strength keeps his arms from popping out of their sockets.
Sooooo... he doesn't need a grip. But I still think it looks cool. Plus I like the flex-flip motion for firing the web fluid. So it's not a total whippet.

A wrapping grip? Sounds quite possible. On some pics he actually has a few web twirls around his hand.
Easytoon? Is it good?
And how long did it take you to do this?

Easytoon is VERY basic... in some respects, this is a good thing because it forces you to rely on basic skills that are all too often sidestepped or avoided by modern animators working in modern software-based production. Easytoon makes you draw every frame by hand, allows for very little in terms of Layering and copypaste, and makes you set up timing essentially by memory.
It's a glorified flipbook-maker, but as such what you get out of it is entirely proportional to what you put into it.
This took an hour or two over an evening to draw. I'm not the first to think of a wrapping grip for Spidey (Larsen and McFarlane were big proponents of looped webbing in his fist back in the 90's) but my initial reasons for thinking it was necessary were flawed, as I described above; Spidey doesn't need it, because he has super-spidey-grip.

Thanks for the thorough info. And is your avatar made in EasyToon?

Yes. Easytoon only makes GIFs, and it works best with small sizes.

yes, I really like the way he goes from, spinning the web, to grabbing the web, did you have any reference material?

Nothing in particular, nope. I'm not even sure what I would refer to, for something like this...

LOL, Awesome animation. That how I always pictured Spidey to swing as well. I remember as a little boy I would pretend to be spidey and when I would do my imaginary web thwip I'd roll and curl my wrist just like that to wrap my 'webbing' around my hand.
Really really cool mate.

lol i was about to say , as i read your postulation on how he gripped it , but the edited postulation is correct ... the genetic alteration enhances/reinforces the overall strength and kinetics all the muscles of the body can withstand to allow him to pull and swing himself and ... if you watch sam raimi's Spiderman (1) they illustrate rather well how his spidey grip works though its controlled on a subconcious and inuitive level. :-p
cool animation...

Easytoon. It's free, and fairly good for practice like this. Helps if you have a tablet, though.

lol, spidey's hand morphs during the transition. still cool though and its a neat way to loop it too.

I watched this over and over and even frame by frame and I love the little details in the way he wraps his hand round the web. Like you mentioned, I'm not sure either how he would really pull this off but I guess that is up to Stan Lee or someone with more authority to decide. Hehehe. This is great though and the seamless looping of the animation really hypnotises you. The sketchy look has a really kinetic feeling and the fact you seem to have drawn the frames really fast too helps a lot in making this work so well.

Nice perspective. I like how you have action outside of the frame. Perhaps his body could bend a little as he swings.

I remember that McFarlane and Larsen draw him as though he gathers up extra webbing in loops in his fist, but it's not quite the same. Still, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks on these things.

Heck, that sort of theorizing is how I write almost all my stories... thinking things like, "why would you use a sword if there's guns in the universe... well, there must be some reason hardly anyone uses guns... maybe it's because blahblahblah," and so forth. That's how I put together a framework to start assembling the background of the world.

firsrt time i have actually seen someone actually pull off the naimation for how he swings. Everyone cheapens the hands in the old cartoons. That is awesome.

wow! this is GREAT!!
this isn't the kind of thing you usually see him do on any of the cartoons that have been around--and that's a good thing. he's got some great style going here and it's actually DYNAMIC for a change!! love it. the anticipation on his arm swing before he shoots his web really adds to this. also, very clever having him on and offscreen for almost equal times, it's helping to achieve a fast pace to this, keeping it dynamic and saving you time animating. awesome!
too bad this isn't clean lineart, a higher res or color, but whatever. it's still amazing.
great work man!

Spidey does usually use the wrap technique. Just a little bit of trivia for you. If timed correctly, the wrap technique for something like that isn't really that inconvenient -- especially if you consider Spidey's super strength and agility.

It's cool how you have his hand wrapping around the webbing. I never gave that any thought, even someone as quick and agile as Spidey would have trouble grabbing that thin cord of web. I guess that's why they draw it so thick and detailed in the comics. Anyway, this is great, I agree that some buildings would make this perfect, but of course it's not necessary. Now, what is this "easytoon"?

Freeware gif animation software from Korea, I think. There's a cat out there who does some brilliant work with this, but I just play with it from time to time to test out ideas or just spit something out of my head. You can find it with some searching, but I can't really help much with the actual functioning of the software... I barely get it myself.

so you drew this frame by frame and then turned it into a gif?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Inkthinker In reply to cls-one [2005-05-02 19:23:35 +0000 UTC]
Easytoon collates the frames for you, all you have to determine is the interval between frames. This has an interval of "8", whatever that means. It's hard as hell to say, really... it's a subjective timeframe based on the gif's internal code and can vary from computer to computer depending on processing speed, I guess... I don't doubt that for some people, it plays kinda fast or slow.
But all I actually had to do was draw the frames, insert betweens where needed, and export it as a GIF.
