Description
Just messing about when I should be sleeping, or working, or doing anything EXCEPT fiddling with this sort of thing.Still, it's more fun than clipping toenails.
Easytoon (as usual). 80 drawn frames, 25fps, tablet drawn.
Mostly this began as an expiriment in the sort of ramped motion that's utilised in the initial cut. I think I was still too linear with it, and you can tell I got tired of all the arrows pretty quickly. Still, it'd be fun to do a full-blown scene like this.

Where/how did you learn to animate? That was freaking amazing. The arrows are near perfect. I love you.

Wh- where did you learn how to do these kind of things?!?!
I can't get that kind of perspective... I only get 2D stick figures...

Practice and study, mostly. It helps to loosen up and think in terms of underlying structure rather than final line... it's not just about how it looks, but how it's built. When you can work out how it's built, then you can use basic perspective/composition skills to flesh out any shape from any angle (all that boring-ass vanishing-point stuff actually becomes useful at that point).

It's always the boring stuff that helps the most...
I shall work!

So you use easytoon to do this? Hmm. Are you using a plain old mouse to draw it out, or something else? Bit of a dumb question (I know), but I'd like to learn to animate as well!

Inkthinker In reply to Braise [2008-07-11 01:04:32 +0000 UTC]
Not a dumb question in the least.
No, I don't think I could do it with a mouse. I use a WACOM tablet... for a long time I used a 4x5 Graphire, but nowadays I have a 9x12 Intuos.

Hmm. Interesting. Those tablets have quite a.. price tag. I mean, I know they can't be that cheap, but seriously, $1,958.99? Is there much difference between smaller ones? I myself tend not to take that much space when I doodle. Sorry for the nudging, I'm just curious! Thanks.

I think you might have been looking at the Cintiq, which is the top-of-the-line model. A 4x5 can cost as little as $50-$99, and the one I use costs about $450 (actually, the one I use is old now... the new equivalent has touch-sliders and other goodies).
I use Cintiqs at Studio Fates, where I work as an animator, but they are definitely an investment and probably not suitable for a beginner, unless you have deep pockets.
I love my 9x12, because it's equal to the 4:3 ratio of the screen and I feel less cramped than I did on a smaller tablet. But I worked on a 4x5 for years and did quite a lot of good work with it, so I recommend it as a good place to start.
It is becoming more and more necessary, if you want a career in commercial illustration, to work in the digital environment. It's become the standard, it offers a lot of flexibility, and it allows for faster work already built into the digital format that editors and art directors need anyway (if you work on phyiscal media, you need to scan it and effectively digitize it. Starting out digital puts you there to begin with). Of course, if you're a hobbyist or fine artist then you have more of a choice in the matter.

Interesting. Cool, thanks a bunch, especially for that last bit of info. I guess for now, I'm going for the 4x5, which I can afford now for relatively cheap. If anything spurts or grows, then I'd advance to a bigger tablet. Once again, thanks!

No problem! I have a friend who recently bought the WACOM "Bamboo" (which is, I guess, the equivalent to my old Graphire 4x5) and it's a pretty good place for a beginner to start. Remember that it takes a good bit of practice to get used to using a new tool... it's not quite the same as using pencils and paper, it feels and works a little different. But keep practicing and you should get used to it after a while. Don't get discouraged, just keep working at it!

All the frames are usually drawn by hand, but in the computer using either a tablet or a Cintiq. Old school technique, new school technology.

So rad.

I can never get enough of your work man-- it just brings about tears of joy (and feelings of envy)
i've improved quite a bit since i first started animating in easytoon *nothing of substance.. more for novelty LOL*
but it still seems like i've a little ways to go..(or rather maybe i lack the patience ) to become as skilled as you are
~ i also grabbed that updated version of Easytoon.... Toning is a Hell of a lot easier with this version

Very nice to see.
The timing on the arrows movement . . .very amazing.
Just curious, do you use one of those time sheet/scales?
FAV+

Inkthinker In reply to Africanime [2007-02-28 03:15:38 +0000 UTC]
Nope, not for this... it's all in my head instead.
I could make a timing sheet or set scales, but there wouldn't be much point because I'm the only person laying hands on it... timing sheets/scales are more useful when handing animation off to someone else.

Ahhh, I love it. From the preview image, at first glance I thought they were grains of wheat, but nay. really nice. I think my favorite part is when they're just a few specks in the sky. Really neat. Having just black and white without any background at all really gives this a frenzied and confusing (in a good way) animation. Rarely knowing which way is down is kinda cool. :+Fav: I love watching these...

Nicely done. I've an idea for an animation that has a bit of arrows in it like this, but it's never gotten past the rough storyboard stage.

Well, it's not something I'm being super original about myself... it's a shot that appears in a lot of movies and at least a couple anime.
But it's good practice for timing.

I've continue to produce on ( ver 1.91 finally i've found it xD )but my drawing style looks a bit to... raw to this XD
Nice animation by the way, the way you draw the curves of shower was pretty good. And the back flip twited half moon of red momntain in back sde at 360 + 450 / TT ยฐ, was relly nice..
I should improve my self ... รจ_รฉ

You can get version 1.9.5 here: [link]
It's essentially 1.9.1 with a new interface that rides over the Setagaya version. It opens up a couple new tools that apparently were in the original program, but were removed from funtionality for some reason (like a text tool).

Yap! tools have been removed!!
(I hope that my previous stuffs could work with this version )
Yeah! you've got the English version GREAT! ( I had the french one r__r.. nice but for the animation terms it's not the same so, tools change but not the method : D )

The most incredible part (in my opinion) is the arrows first appearing. They make a very smooth entrance before striking down at light speed to the ground with some incredible sense of gravity. You can almost hear a breath let in before they all explode into action!
Very nice work.

That's the timing at work. Glad it came out right, though I think I could definitely have put more work into it... you can see the last couple frames where I was getting tired of it.

jonathanvair In reply to Inkthinker [2007-02-23 08:32:19 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure if it wasn't an extra thing on the side we'd see more near the end. I'm not complaining though.
And hey, we both know it's way easier to get these arrows in later when you've taken a break from it for a few days.
Well, I gotta go to bed. I stayed up late again drawing.

Well, once again, you have outdone yourself, even in 80 frames. I was a little disappointed with my first attempt at Easytoon (after viewing it online), as when I viewed the speed in the program, the movement was great, but then when I posted the animation, it seemed quite slow compared to what it played on the disk drive. Any ideas as to how to speed it up, I think some frames are already at 0 or 1? Thanks and good job again...
:B
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Inkthinker In reply to Futurender [2007-02-23 07:53:07 +0000 UTC]
I set the Interval (or Animation Properties, depending on your version of Easytoon) to "8", with occasional frames set to "4". The default setting is always "20", which is pretty slow. You can change that default in the upper menu, though. Then every individual frame with a setting of "0" will use the Animation Properties setting as it's default timing.
Remember that all GIF timing is set to fractions of 100. 8/100 is 12.5fps or approx. 25fps in twos, equivalent to PAL and nearly equivalent to NTSC film. So it's a good round number for practicing.
