Description
So I had this weird deja-vu thing that hit me recently, as I was flipping through an old sketchbook, looking for a blank page. I found a bunch of illustrations from about 6 years ago, and they don't suck. I mean, they're not up to my current standards, sure, but they're actually not badAs you may know, I am a mad, mad fan of Terry Pratchett, and espescially The Discworld. I read my first Disc novel back in '89, an import copy of Equal Rites, and I was hooked. Since then I've collected every Disc novel available (in fact, some have become so tattered and worn from repeated readings that I need to replace them), over 30 books and he's still going strong, as sharp as ever.
His newest Discworld book, Going Postal , hits the streets here in just a week, so in celebration of the new and my love for the old, I thought I'd share with you a little something I did back in 1998.
***
I so rarely do fanart, but for Pratchett I can make a wide exception. I created these before I discovered the work of Paul Kidby, who is without a doubt the best Discworld artist to ever illustrate dwarf bread, and so I had no visual representations for the various characters who already existed so vibrantly on the page. One of the cool things about a well-written character is that they're so easy to illustrate... they're already alive, in a sense, so all you have to do is draw them as you see them. I guess it's a testament to the writing of Pratchett that my character designs were actually not far off at all from Kidby's which are pretty much perfect (I think he makes Carrot look a bit too thick-headed, personally).
This is one of four pages I drew, each with two of my favorite characters. I'm most fond of the City Watch series, because they largely take place in Ankh-Morpork, Pearl of Cities (keeping in mind that a pearl, while beautiful, is at the same time a piece of irritating shit covered in mucus). You can keep your Rivendells and Bag-Ends, your Shadowdales and Waterdeeps... if there was one fantasy city I wish I could visit, it'd be Ankh-Morpork. It has a smell.
And at least I know enough to stay out The Shades.
This was also part of my "notebook" phase, when I had a thing for drawing sketches and then surrounding them with little notes and such... emulating really interesting "journal" type sketchbooks which I see a lot in movies and so on, but rarely in real life. It takes a lot of work to throw on a ton of extraneous text! I tried to paraphrase Pratchett's writing as well as I could, but it's quite likely that I've hit a wrong detail (for instance, I was very worried for a while that Carrot's last name was Stronginthearm, not Ironfoundersson). Don't hesitate to correct any screwups I've made.
Yes, I totally ripped the helmet from Asterix.

Much repsect for Pratchet and Discworld. Did you ever try and draw the actual discworld, turtle and all?

I did stick it into the BG of a picture I did for Kenzer, but I think I took that off the DA page. It was a picture of a wizard researching a spell while in outer space... amongst the items floating in null-G around him was a small turtle with a little discworld on its back.
I'm nutty for the Disc, but I can't compete with Paul Kidby (and don't really want to)... he nails about 90% of the characters perfectly, and the other 10% are even better.

Well, I'll have to check that guy out. A friend of mine let me borrow a couple of his books for a while. I don't remember them too well, but I love the one about the prince of Anhk Morpork, I hope I spelled that right. If not, kill me quickly.

If you can get a copy of The Last Hero, it's fully illustrated by Kidby. Mind, though, if you're into the continuity aspects of the various books then you ought to first read The Light Fantastic, Guards, Guards! and Interesting Times in order to really enjoy the story.
I am a Disc nerd.

ah I must say I still have an affection for Josh Kirby (do you think he got 2 artists with such similar names cos he thought nobody would notice the change?!?) These are awesome, remind me of Asterix, in a very good way! you should approach Pratchett for the next graphic novel adaptation.

I'd love to do a Pratchett adaptation... I think the comics adaptation of The Light Fantastic was okay, but the animated adaptation of Wyrd Sisters looked terrible. It seems too many people can't separate "funny" from "cartoony". The Discworld is a satire, not a caricature... only Paul Kidby seems to visually "get it".
I'd like to do it ina format like Mark Oakley's Thieves & Kings, a combination of prose and sequential storytelling. Do action scenes and character interaction in comics form, but when the story segues into descriptive prose or so forth, then you switch over to illuminated pages, narrative surrounded by illustration. And no punking out on the story just to squeeze the whole thing into 4 measly issues. Do it right, however many pages it takes.
Unfortunately, I have no "in" with anyone remotely related to his "people", so I have no way to approach him short of the usual fanmail and so forth, of which I'm sure he recieves a metric ton every week, and uses it as insulation packing for his attic. But maybe I can track him down at a con, or something, slip him some artwork.
A Discworld adaptation, though... that'd be fun. I could really get into that. *sigh*

cool, I've read the pyramids book from pratchett. I really liked the scene where the city-watch was counting their chances at defeating the female dragon, the outcome was really great, my mom was looking odd when I bursted in laughing while reading it.
The characters are neatly done^^
I would try to get some sketches from 6 years back, I've only been sketching intensive since 3 years ^^
keep it up, + your on my watch now...

Well if you're going to do fan art Prachett is a good place to start, you should do a large Mort or maybe even a Rincewind with the Luggage. Granny WeatherWax isn't bade either.

Rincwind and The Luggage is on page 03.
Remember, this is all old work from years ago... I'm not doing anything new with these, just filling time while I work and showing some old stuff.
I thought about trying Granny, but I'm just not man enough to attempt to match her countenance.

oh god, cute. You've got such an awesome style, full of exageration and mood - you should really be drawing for newspapers..

Did that, actually... my first job as an illustrator was drawing editorial cartoons for The Clay County Progress, the local newspaper for Hayesville, NC, back when I was about 18, fresh out of high school and dumber than really dumb dirt.
I'd do it again, if I had an agent who got me the jobs. It's easy enough work, and if you work for the right newspapers, it can pay pretty decently.

He's coming... I drew him on the last page of the set, though. And I'm afraid I didn't use reference, so he looks a bit more like a chimp than an orangutan.
But he's definitely not an m-word.

I got obsessed with it a while ago... life is full of little details, but you don't notice them until they're suddenly not there. The trick is to not let obsession with detail override the composition as a whole, which is why it's important to start big and loose, and work layer upon layer until you end up tight and detailed.
Right now my favorite guy for detailed character illustrations is "Oh! Great", but I recently got intothe work of our very own Wen-M [link]
Dig those school uniforms! The embroidery... the belts... the accessories... *drool*. It really brings the characters a step closer to life.

I just happened to come online when you submitted this one. How do you have such an eye for little details? I mean, is it something automatic that's ingrained within you, or did you train yourself to do it?
