Description
So here's number two in a four-part series... the second page of a couple pages of fanart that I did around 6 years ago as an homage to the excellent characters of Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Here we have the other two stars of the City Watch (when I drew this, it predated the Watch's current ranks... remember when it was just four guys?).Kidby draws Vimes as a shade of Clint Eastwood, who admittedly has the perfect face for Vimes, if not the voice. I don't know why I drew Vimes with a mustache like this (Kidby's is roughly stubbled in true Man With No Name fashion), but I think we were going for the same Lone Western Sheriff look...
I remember Pratchett describing the dragon in Guards! Guards! as "horse-faced", so I went with this profile. I didn't have a really good handle on Errol, though, and didn't try for him.

Me neither, but I was on a Uderzo kick. Pratchett mentions both sandals and boots, and from Kidby's work (which I consider definitive) it seems like I wasn't too far off, but given another shot I think I'd try to make their designs a little more Gallic and a little less Roman. Pratchett says Ankh-Morpork is, in his mind, a cross between Prague, London, Seattle and NYC, with the politics of Renaissance Florence, so I'd probably try to do something that reflects those influences more.

This is great! I never knew how Nobby Nobbs looks like but now I have got a very good impression... although, doesn't he look a little too human? Just kidding...

Check out Paul Kidby's work in The Art of The Discworld... he pretty much nails everything visually, and his Nobby is excellent.

Possibly one of the most easily taken-out-of-context comments I've ever received.

Very funny work! I ask my self why all of us think in Vimesy (sorry, nightwatch i my new obsesion... ) as Clint Eastwood (well, with some years less....)...

Probably because Pratchett has made a couple "make my day" jokes. He says Vimes is a bit of Eastwood and a lot of Peter Postlethwaite, whoever that is...
*shrug*

The Hongs, Fangs and Tangs got nothing on us. We're the really vicious bastards, ask anyone on the Counterweight Continent.
I absolutely love all of Paul Kidby's Discworld art. I've got two copies of The Last Hero and both The Art of the Discworld and the lesser-known Pratchett Portfolio. His pencils are so awesome, and every one of his takes is dead-solid to the characters.

Yeah, Thud's out on the 5th of October. The cover art for it is on Paul Kidby's website. The new Aching book, Wintersmith, is supposed to be released some time early next year.
I love this piece, though I'm not sure about Vimes' moustache or Nobby's hair. But otherwise... brilliant. Right down to Nobby's nicotine graveyard.

Yah, I drew these long before I saw Kidby's work. I much prefer his versions.

Paul Kidby's already nailed the character as well as I ever could. Perhaps if Terry does another Watch book, I'll be inspired again, but for now I've put this stuff back into the vault.
When is the next Pratchett due, anyone know? I heard he plans to do more of the Aching series, and I can always take more of the Nac Mac Feegle (crivens!!).

I love Discworld! And I love Vimes! Didn't like him at first, in the earlier guards series, but lately, especially with Night Watch or something (where he goes back in time and fixes up the watch), he's been just awesome. At the beginning he just got drunk a lot. Nobby looks a bit taller than what I imagine him. And you've given Vimes a somewhat Asian look. All the same, the comic style that you chose to draw them in is very suitably Prachetty! It captures the feel of his novels well. Or the humor, in it, rather. I love the touch with Nobby carrying the lantern onna stick.

Haha! Great Nobby, and Vimes rules. Has to be one of my favourite characters from the books, and that's a really nice take on him. Lovely details on the costumes, and so nicely drawn again!
