Description
So I had this weird deja-vu thing that hit me recently, as I was flipping through an old sketchbook, looking for a blank page. I found a bunch of illustrations from about 6 years ago, and they don't suck. I mean, they're not up to my current standards, sure, but they're actually not badAs you may know, I am a mad, mad fan of Terry Pratchett, and espescially The Discworld. I read my first Disc novel back in '89, an import copy of Equal Rites, and I was hooked. Since then I've collected every Disc novel available (in fact, some have become so tattered and worn from repeated readings that I need to replace them), over 30 books and he's still going strong, as sharp as ever.
His newest Discworld book, Going Postal , hits the streets here in just a week, so in celebration of the new and my love for the old, I thought I'd share with you a little something I did back in 1998.
***
I so rarely do fanart, but for Pratchett I can make a wide exception. I created these before I discovered the work of Paul Kidby, who is without a doubt the best Discworld artist to ever illustrate dwarf bread, and so I had no visual representations for the various characters who already existed so vibrantly on the page. One of the cool things about a well-written character is that they're so easy to illustrate... they're already alive, in a sense, so all you have to do is draw them as you see them. I guess it's a testament to the writing of Pratchett that my character designs were actually not far off at all from Kidby's which are pretty much perfect (I think he makes Carrot look a bit too thick-headed, personally).
This is one of four pages I drew, each with two of my favorite characters. I'm most fond of the City Watch series, because they largely take place in Ankh-Morpork, Pearl of Cities (keeping in mind that a pearl, while beautiful, is at the same time a piece of irritating shit covered in mucus). You can keep your Rivendells and Bag-Ends, your Shadowdales and Waterdeeps... if there was one fantasy city I wish I could visit, it'd be Ankh-Morpork. It has a smell.
And at least I know enough to stay out The Shades.
This was also part of my "notebook" phase, when I had a thing for drawing sketches and then surrounding them with little notes and such... emulating really interesting "journal" type sketchbooks which I see a lot in movies and so on, but rarely in real life. It takes a lot of work to throw on a ton of extraneous text! I tried to paraphrase Pratchett's writing as well as I could, but it's quite likely that I've hit a wrong detail (for instance, I was very worried for a while that Carrot's last name was Stronginthearm, not Ironfoundersson). Don't hesitate to correct any screwups I've made.
Yes, I totally ripped the helmet from Asterix.

Wow, that's extremely well drawn. Frankly, Carrot rules, and it's great to see him and Fred on here. Please draw some more, like Angua or Nobby or Vimes.

I almost totally would, if the man would just write another book with Carrot or Angua or Nobby or Vimes. I'm hoping they'll show up in the next book, Unseen Academicals, but I expect that to be a mostly UU wizard-centric book, lots of Ridcully and Bursar and Librarian, maybe some Rincewind, though I think he's been pretty determined to let Rincewind alone.
After that, I think he's said the next one is the last Tiffany Aching book, I Shall Wear Midnight, and I'm pretty psyched for that, I like the Aching series.
Past that, who knows? He says his alzheimers is apparently stable and responding to treatment, so the worst we may suffer is that he slows down a bit and needs a transcription assistant. And hell, he's got kids for that.

Yeah. Although, "Jingo" and "The Fifth Elephant" were very good as it is. I wasn't aware of his next book, but I do like the wizards; I thought they particularly gave "Hogfather" a very funny element.
Frankly, I'm quite happy if he leaves Rincewind be, because although I love him as a character I think the plots for his books all lack a bit of the personality that his other books have.
I haven't read any Tiffany Aching books, which ones does she appear in?
Personally, I would enjoy reading a witches novel or a Susan/Death one next.

The Aching books are often filed under "Young Adult" because the primary character is a young girl who's discovering what it means to be a witch... a Discworld witch, which is no easy thing to be.
Sort of like "Equal Rites", but MUCH better and spread over four books rather than one. It's great stuff, Pratchett doesn't write down and really I don't think there's much difference between his so-called YA books and his regular material, but nobody asked me.
The series also stars the Nac Mac Feegle, which is like "Braveheart" meets "The Smurfs". The pictsies steal anything that isn't nailed down, and then they steal the nails. I would read a whole damn book about the Feegles.
In order, the Aching books are:
The Wee Free Men
A Hat Full of Sky
Wintersmith
and the next one, which is probably still a couple years away, I Shall Wear Midnight. The series starts when she's about 10, and she ages a couple years in each successive one.
If you want a new Witches book, the Aching series is where to go. Granny and Nanny both make appearances, though in somewhat secondary roles (at least, as secondary a role as you'll ever see for Granny Weatherwax).

Ah, yes. I've seen those. But they're always filed under "For younger readers" so I just assumed that meant they were for smaller children; which is why I haven't read them.

Nope, they're awesome. Pratchett never writes down, the only reason they're YA books is that they star young characters.

Nope, never did. I discovered Paul Kidby and he scratches my itch pretty good. I might come back to the Disc when another Disc novel comes out, though I think he next one might be a Moist Lipwig book, and he's not my favorite new character... I understand why he's not doing the old cast as much, but Moist doesn't ring my bell visually the way other characters have.
I'm not done chasing novelised content, though.

I liked that one a lot. The Watch series is my favorite, and I liked the early ones best (I love the later ones too, especially Night Watch), but there's some things about Ankh-Morpork before it evolved over the course of a dozen novels that I miss a little.

I agree completely, that's why I'm reading them over again.
I also love the Witches miniseries. that's another entertaining series, not to mention the wee free men. but yeah, I know what you mean about Ankh-Morpork, I feel like the earlier books gave you just enough that you could see a city, whilst your imagination filled in the rest in a way you saw it in your mind's eye.

Tiffany Aching and the Nac Mac Feegle is definitely my favorite new material (I'm very much looking forward to I Shall Wear Midnight which ought to be the last Aching book, though if she doesn't make an appearance in the other series I'll be very surprised).
I have a sneaking and dreadful suspicion that Pratchett may finally let Granny Weatherwax go, and that he's grooming Tiffany as a sort of younger Granny. They certainly have some personality traits in common.
I don't mind so much that Ankh-Morpork has been filled out, it's just that it's gotten so... civilised. I half expect tour groups in The Shades.

thats actualy very close to how i see carrot and colon, the armors more roman that i would have used but then again its also countless times better than anything i could draw.
i tend to surround pics with text when doing chara-designs and notes
btw pratchett's books rule

Yeah, the romanesque styling was related to me being on an Uderzo kick for a while there. It started with the sandals and went from there. On a second round I'd probably take more of a lead from Kidby's designs.

There was Josh Kirby, who passed away a few years back, and Paul Kidby, who's the "official" Disc artist (Art of the Discworld, The Last Hero, The Pratchett Portfolio) and who's work graces the current British editions, but in the States we get some other art director and style who's work is nice, but just not as nice as the Kidby illustrated covers.
