Description Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king.

Part of Brandon Sanderson's original pitch package for The Way of Kings, out now from Tor books. At the very beginning of the story, Szeth commits a murder which sparks a great conflict that drives the events through which so many will suffer or triumph. Fun trivia bit: in the first draft of the book that Brandon sent me, the line above was the first line in the novel (it shifted deeper in the final edit, though it still opens a chapter. You can read it for free on Tor.com if you sign in).

Brandon actually had me illustrate several main characters from his manuscript, but only this image of Szeth made it (in a small part) into the book. Brandon's made a clear decision (which I agree with) not to define the faces of his characters in the book's concept art and illustrations any further than needed, so as to not force the reader to accept any one particular vision of how the characters look beyond the features defined in the text. That is to say, if I imagine that Kaladin looks like a certain actor, and you imagine that he looks like your brother, and someone else imagines that he looks like that cute boy in her class, so long as those visions don't directly contradict the description in the book (which is pretty loose), we're all equally correct. That personal image of a character's face in our mind is part of what makes our individual reading experiences unique and personal, and neither he nor I would want to mess with that.

Given the role that the 20 illustrations created by Isaac Stewart, Greg Call and myself play in the book, this was a necessary mandate.

But here I was trying to illustrate the shame and sadness that appear in Szeth's character even as he performs unforgiveable actions, so I purposefully hid his face as an expression of humility. This makes this probably the only main character illustration from the book which anyone is likely to see from me (at least until we collect everything into an art book, some day).

His Shardblade is atypically small compared to others, about the size of a normal sword. Brandon allowed me a bit of license with the belt tone (not being white).

I had an absolute blast conceptualizing and illustrating the plant and animal illustrations that do appear within the novel itself, but there's a lot of concept work that took place leading up to those drawings which won't see print for a while (at least until we collect an art book, which needs a few more volumes to fill up). He was kind enough to allow me to pick out a few choice bits and put them online for you to see, while we wait.

Welcome to the party! I don't post as much here as I once did, but there's a lot of archived stuff that you might find interesting. I've also worked on The Rithmatist and The Alloy of Law, and I expect to work on many more books in the years to come. Two new Mistborn books this year!

Enjoy Words of Radiance, I think we kicked everything up a notch for book 2.

Digital painting (Photoshop, to be specific). It's meant to resemble pencil work, but it's good to have the flexibility of digital media to work with.

Personally I've come to picture Kaladin as looking exactly like Henry Cavill. It's partly because of Cavill's beard in "Man of Steel" and mostly because of his performance in "Immortals." And Szeth will always be Szeth-Son-Son-Double Son-Vallano to me.

There's just something about this illustration that hits me, though. And I still have problems with the book itself. Just... geez.

Inkthinker In reply to Wisdom-Thumbs [2013-05-30 05:21:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm glad it has impact, it's probably the only one of our character portraits that will be "official" (as in, used for the novels) anytime soon.

I think Cavil's too old (for Kaladin), he's somewhere between 19-21 in the novels. Not that you can't imagine him as you like.

Wisdom-Thumbs In reply to Inkthinker [2013-05-30 08:25:53 +0000 UTC]

Wait, wasn't Kaladin mentioned to be aged beyond his years by his life as a slave and then a bridgeman? If anything, Cavill's too damn buff.

The illustrations were, honestly, some of the best parts of that book. I only finished reading it yesterday morning. Then I had to go back through and just take in the drawings. At some point I was looking at the sketch of one of the plants and I realized "holy shit, this isn't an actual plant. Somebody came up with this plant in their imagination and fully realized it onto paper." So, high fives!

Inkthinker In reply to Wisdom-Thumbs [2013-05-31 02:36:09 +0000 UTC]

Weelll... "aged beyond his years" is a term with a LOT of leeway for interpretation. I take it to refer to his bearing and certain details, like his eyes (they should be the eyes of a man who has seen some shit and can't let it go).

As for too buff... well, I feel like he should be agile and slender enough to be a believable spearman in the classic martial arts manner, but he's still spent months and months carrying his portion of a massive weight across miles of rough terrain multiple times per week in the face of certain death. That's gotta be worth some decent core strength.

I'm glad you like the plants! Brandon gave me a lot of leeway in designing aspects of their physiology and biology, so I had more fun that I generally deserve. This time around, probably less plants but more creatures. I'm stoked.

Wisdom-Thumbs In reply to Inkthinker [2013-05-31 19:31:13 +0000 UTC]

The drawing of the creatures were all excellent as well. The book made it hard to picture Axehounds, so I just kept a mental image of big ants with dog tongues. Seeing the illustration took it to all new levels. The only problem is Shallan's apparent habit of naming creatures and plants that everybody in her world already knows. It'd be like drawing a cow and labeling it "cow." But that's just a minor quibble and not always avoidable.

I really appreciate how open you guys are. Most big-name types and their partners are all but unapproachable, at least in my experience. Keep it up!

Thank you! The axehound is a favorite of mine, and one of the illustrations that secured my role in the production.

The naming of things in the sketches is a bit of a cheat for the readers... Some things would be easy to guess (chulls, skyeels) but others might be more difficult (various breeds of rockbud, for instance), and it's useful when showing the images outside of the context of the novel. It's a good point though though, and worth some thought. I'll keep it in mind as we work on Words of Radiance.

I think the internet completely changes the game when it comes to approaching creators. There will always be some who prefer to stay secluded, and that's perfectly fine, but for those of us who enjoy interacting with the audience, it actually makes that possible. 20 years ago, the best you could hope for would be to make pen-pals with someone, presuming you could even get a point of contact.

I'm probably the easiest person on the team to approach online, but Brandon pops up here and there. Reddit, Facebook, and several conventions per year, and he's usually willing to answer questions when asked. Especially insightful or interesting questions.

Beautiful! Szeth is a favorite character of mine in the book, and the illustration that was there to start his chapters was always too small. Now I find not only the full size picture, but one of the original illustrators too! LUCKY DAY!

I love this book, and Szeth was always my favorite character. I just love how he looks. It goes so well with how his character is in the story. I especially like his Shardblade, the shape is really nice. I also loved how the book didn't give full pictures of all the characters, cause it really set off my imgination and caused my to doodle all of them on my notebooks. Especially Sylphrena (sorry if spelt it wrong, im not the best at that), she was all over my sketchbook. Always hiding in the corner and being the devious little spren she is.

I'm currently reading it (it was divided into two books here in Germany due to the great amount of pages - the German translation has about 700 pages more than the original) and I just startet part two.

This is a great character illustration, I really liked it when I saw it in the book. I think the pose fits Szeth's character very well.

An art book would be a great idea!

I read the Way of Kings as soon as it was released, and I loved it. Not only, however, because it's well written fantasy. I love it because of how connected the art and the prose were - that's rare. As an artist, it's something I always look for, but rarely find. The amount of detail was stunning and more so, the obvious amount of communication that went on. It would have been a lesser book if not - in part - for your artwork. Awesome job!

It helps a great deal that I work with Brandon directly. It allows us a deep level of back-and-forth, and I get the benefit of personal feedback that ensures I'm on the right track when designing for his world. It's a lot more rewarding for both of us, I think.

Heh... yeah, maybe I'm an easy mark, but I just didn't see that one coming. Probably 'cause I had a certain image of that character in my head (something like the old king in The Princess Bride film) and I wasn't expecting him to be so cold-blooded.

I think Szeth's was my favourite chapter/character illustration. It just seemed so perfect considering how full of sadness and regret his chapters always were. I rather hope he doesn't die. That often seems to happen to my favourite characters. >.>

This picture was one of my favorite illustrations in The Way of Kings, even though it was just a small bit that headed Szeth's chapters. Finding the full version of it totally made my day. Thank you so much for all that you've contributed to Brandon Sanderson's works.
I love your Mistborn pictures, too.
I would absolutely love to see the other main characters that you illustrated for Way of Kings as well. (If you've posted them up here somewhere already, then I didn't find them...)
Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you! The version in the novel was adapted by Isaac, he does all the iconography for Brandon's books. The other stuff is shown at cons sometimes, but we figure we'll put together an art book somewhere down the line, probably closer to the halfway mark... so that's a few years out, but hey, it takes time to make that much awesome!

On the upside, I got a whole mess of Mistborn work in the pipes for the RPG, and that'll hit later this year.

Inkthinker In reply to BurpingTurtles [2011-06-25 06:59:33 +0000 UTC]

I think so. The plan as I understand it is to do up an art book at some point for the series as a whole, but it's still very early for that. When we're a few more books in, we should have the content and the support in place for it.

In the meantime, if you catch us at a convention there's good odds you can catch some of the other portraits and roughs there.

BurpingTurtles In reply to Inkthinker [2011-06-27 03:23:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for that. But alas, no conventions ever come to the Midwest, and I don't have the means to travel to one, sadly.

Yeah, I know how that goes... for the longest time, the only real Con near me was 75 miles away once a year, getting to it was a challenge.

Keep an eye out for the book then someday! I'll probably still be here on DA, and I'll shout about it then.
