Description Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar, wore white on the day he was to kill a king.

Part of Brandon Sanderson's original pitch package for The Way of Kings, out now from Tor books. At the very beginning of the story, Szeth commits a murder which sparks a great conflict that drives the events through which so many will suffer or triumph. Fun trivia bit: in the first draft of the book that Brandon sent me, the line above was the first line in the novel (it shifted deeper in the final edit, though it still opens a chapter. You can read it for free on Tor.com if you sign in).

Brandon actually had me illustrate several main characters from his manuscript, but only this image of Szeth made it (in a small part) into the book. Brandon's made a clear decision (which I agree with) not to define the faces of his characters in the book's concept art and illustrations any further than needed, so as to not force the reader to accept any one particular vision of how the characters look beyond the features defined in the text. That is to say, if I imagine that Kaladin looks like a certain actor, and you imagine that he looks like your brother, and someone else imagines that he looks like that cute boy in her class, so long as those visions don't directly contradict the description in the book (which is pretty loose), we're all equally correct. That personal image of a character's face in our mind is part of what makes our individual reading experiences unique and personal, and neither he nor I would want to mess with that.

Given the role that the 20 illustrations created by Isaac Stewart, Greg Call and myself play in the book, this was a necessary mandate.

But here I was trying to illustrate the shame and sadness that appear in Szeth's character even as he performs unforgiveable actions, so I purposefully hid his face as an expression of humility. This makes this probably the only main character illustration from the book which anyone is likely to see from me (at least until we collect everything into an art book, some day).

His Shardblade is atypically small compared to others, about the size of a normal sword. Brandon allowed me a bit of license with the belt tone (not being white).

I had an absolute blast conceptualizing and illustrating the plant and animal illustrations that do appear within the novel itself, but there's a lot of concept work that took place leading up to those drawings which won't see print for a while (at least until we collect an art book, which needs a few more volumes to fill up). He was kind enough to allow me to pick out a few choice bits and put them online for you to see, while we wait.

oh my gosh you really drew this? That's awesome, when I saw this on deviantart I thought someone redrew it from the book. It's so cool that you originally drew this.

OH. MY. GODS.

Okay! So...I just found you semi by accident, because I was thinking, "I wonder if anyone's drawn a Steel Inquisitor?" So I turned to Google, of course, and a pic of yours ([link] ) was the first to show up. So then I thought, "oh, cool! I should check out his other stuff!"

And then you turn out to be one of the guys doing the art for the Stormlight Archive?!?

Dude. I'm geeking out so hardcore, right now. And, of course...lovely work! This is definitely one of my favorite images from the novel; it conveys all the pain, sorrow, and shame of Szeth so well.

I just got the the book a couple of days ago and was trying to understand something about Szeth when all of a sudden...BAM! I didn't know the artists was you! I knew about your mistborn artwork a while ago. I didn't know you were official. Szeth always has the expression of a shadow looming over him in the form of his master, his body half scarred by just living. Not to say I don't like your version either!

I know I can't actually request what you draw next, though, have you ever thought about drawing Shardplate? I'm not sure what it looks like. Not like regular medieval style armor I hope.

Thanks!

I have drawn some Shardplate, but it's in with all the other concept art for the book (under wraps). I'll likely draw some more soon, but part of the catch with actually, officially working on the book is that I kinda can't do fan-art so much... almost anything I draw that's related to the book goes to Brandon first.

I'm curious, I know the Parshendi specified he wear white, but other than the color, is the outfit you designed here meant to be Shin or Parshendi? Or neither?

(I like it, by the way, although I'm still trying to figure out how the layering works on the top half).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to EHyde [2010-10-02 01:25:42 +0000 UTC]

Good question! This costume was one of the very first, designed long before I read the text of the book or got into the Parshendi people as a whole, and so certain aspects of it should probably be roped in a bit. In retrospect, I would redesign the outfit to be a bit simpler.

He's wearing fairly standard moccasins, pants and long shirt. Over that he wears a cloth belt/sash that ties at the hip, and a thicker belt that buckles around the waist. The robes he's wearing over that have a couple layers over the shoulders like you might see on a duster. The sleeves may be part of the coat, or part of the shirt (either would work).

Aspects I would almost certainly change would be the collars and the outer belt, but at this point I think that ship has sailed. They're not out of place for general Roshari clothing, but possibly for the Parshendi. It might be suitable for the Shin (we know so little about them), but I don't think Szeth would necessarily wear a Shin cut when dressing in Parshendi colors for an Alethi assassination.

I've been frantically searching for fanart for WoK since I finished, and when I came across this, I was about to write a scathing comment along the lines of "how dare you steal the artwork in such an amazing book", but then I read the discription that you're the artist.

And then my brain exploded.

Why am I not DevWatching you?! That will be fixed shortly...

I'm so sad that you won't be releasing your character pictures (atleast not anytime soon), but I can understand why. Unfortunately, I'm the kind of strange person who doesn't picture characters well, so I love it when I find a good picture of a character I love.

I just feel like "Yes! That's what Kaladin and Syl really look like!" And then I can picture them like that everytime I read again.

Your AMAZING picture of Vin with the Koloss sword really solidified my image of Vin.

I hope that someday you and Brandon will decide to release those pictures in some way or another!

Inkthinker In reply to FeatherWriter [2010-09-28 01:22:09 +0000 UTC]

Haha.. well you certainly don't want my Kaladin & Syl image, that one is no good at all.

Dalinar's image was okay, but not very interesting (did show his Shards though). Shallan and Jasnah came out best, perhaps, elements of those illustrations actually made it into the book. I only did a bust for Elkohar, and while I think it captures some of his attitude, it's too cartoony.

Someday they might go into an art book, but not for a while. Brandon makes the ultimate call on what does and doesn't get brought out.

Thanks! Szeth's Shardblade is described as notably shorter than others. Which makes it only slightly larger than a normal sword, instead of ridiculously so. I'm a big fan of the big swords, but I think his fits perfectly with his character.

KyoukiSumeragi In reply to Inkthinker [2010-09-14 15:34:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, he's not really a show off type of character, he's got plenty of OTHER ways to do so if he wants to. Course I'd be in shock too if someone was standing on the ceiling as if it was the ground :3

Absolutely fantastic. Szeth was one of my favourite characters, and the gorgeous illustrations were part of what compelled me to buy the book (that and the fact that I reasoned I could bludgeon someone to death with it if I was accosted on the way home from the bookstore.) I'd be happy to see more, but if you don't post it I understand completely. An artist's whim and all that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Raven-Of-Azarath [2010-09-15 00:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Not so much "artist's whim" as "author's mandate".

Brandon has made a conscious decision (with which I agree) to not firmly define the characters' features in an illustration unless we absolutely have to. He describes the characters, but he wants the each reader's personal interpretations of the description to remain as valid as the next. So maybe you imagine Shallan to look like a certain actress, and I think she looks like my friend, and someone else thinks she looks like her cousin Lou, and as long as those images in our head match the description as written, we're all equally "right".

Szeth here gets a pass because his face is mostly hidden. Someone can see this and still imagine him to look very different from the version the next person envisions.

So while I'll draw lots of other characters or aspects of the world and the books, I probably won't draw a lot of specific characters until I'm asked to. My vision of Kaladin or Dalinar isn't any more "the real version" than yours.

Raven-Of-Azarath In reply to Inkthinker [2010-09-15 01:54:41 +0000 UTC]

Point taken. I am doing my own take on Kaladin's little friend Syl at the moment, purely because she vaguely reminds me of Tinkerbell. As soon as I get my computer set back up, I will run it through photoshop to get the whole effect I want and I will most likely post it here.

The character seems very much like Kal's little angel on his shoulder, and it appeals to me much more than Shallan. Possibly because of the fact that so far I have only gotten a little bit of Shallan to read where I am in the book. However, the way she is described, I keep thinking of Sansa Stark from George RR Martin's Song series, except a little more cut-throat and underhanded.

Inkthinker In reply to Raven-Of-Azarath [2010-09-15 06:31:42 +0000 UTC]

I think she's got a good bit more Arya than Sansa, but I get what you mean.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Raven-Of-Azarath In reply to Inkthinker [2010-09-15 22:25:44 +0000 UTC]

Looks wise she seems like Sansa, personality she is definately Arya.

I have a Something Awful account and lurk the Book Barn, and a lot of people have read Song love the book. I think a lot of people who are (still) waiting for Dance are picking up Brandon's books to fill the time and are finding them to be wonderful. That was what happened to me, actually. I ended up finding Mistborn, reading it in a day and wanting more. I bought the rest of the series and Elantris on Amazon and I suddenly had a new author I adore.

ElberethGilthonielle In reply to ??? [2010-09-09 07:28:58 +0000 UTC]

hey, so what other drawings did you do? Szeth, the maps? Shellan's sketches?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to ElberethGilthonielle [2010-09-14 07:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Isaac Stewart is Brandon's cartographer, he's drawn all the maps for this book, as well as for Mistborn. He's also the guy who handles the chapter headers, as well as designed the written language and symbols. Greg Call was the third artist on Kings, he handled a series of illustrations that represent various Roshari works of art.

I drew Shallan's sketches. All my other work on the book consists of internal concept material that Brandon uses, but which isn't (yet) intended for publication. Szeth's is the only character portrait that I expect to see light anytime soon, but I did put together portraits of other characters as well. Some of them I like (Shallan, Jasnah), and parts of my concept art ended up in the final text. Others I did very badly (my Kaladin & Syl drawing is all wrong) and should probably be forgotten.
