Description
This set of illustrations is related to this character , one of a series of illustrations produced in August of 2007 for the video game On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, from Hothead Games and Penny Arcade (subcontracted through Imaginary Friends Studios ). Check out my most recent Journal entry for more details. So for about a half-dozen or so of the portraits I was assigned, I was also instructed to provide a series of expressions, I presume for use in dialogue cutscenes. Each of these characters had five variations on the basic portrait for a total of six, and each was the same: Talking, Happy, Angry, Suspicious, Suprised (not necessarily in that order).
It was extra fun coming up with the variants for this character, because I was low on reference to begin with, but I think I did okay. It's worth mentioning that these portraits were adjusted slightly at some point after I turned them in... instead of laying on his back, he appears in the game to be sitting up and his tail is included as an expressive indicator (ultimately much better than the way I drew him, so I've got no complaints). So far as I was able to tell, though, only his body was changed, and the expressions remain the same.
Drawn in Photoshop CS2 using an Intuos 9x12 tablet. And of course, all characters and their designs are © Penny Arcade/Hothead Games.

Love PA, can't wait to play the game! You're so lucky!
He looks like he needs to have his anal glands expressed. [link]

I wonder if that supposed to be the same cat? I thought it was Gabe's cat, but maybe it's not that determinate.

I think it's always been Tycho's, but it hasn't been in the comic much, so not sure.

More like a thumbnail. Maybe a thumbprint. But there's a couple drawings in there.

Very nice. I got a chance to download the demo. Its an interesting plot, and also really funny. How much of the art was collaborative? Did you physically meet with the designers, or was it all done over the phone and pc?

It wasn't really collaborative, I was more of a work-for-hire illustrator brought on as a subcontractor for a set. I never got to meet with anyone, the whole job was done over the Net (actually, even though they're a US designer, I got my part of the work from Singapore. Which is a little ironic) through IM. I did get to meet Mike and Jerry (Gabe and Tycho) at the San Diego ComiCon right before I started the job, but that place is really not suitable to conversation, and they were always a bit mobbed... I think they thought I was actually trying to hit them up for work.
I was provided with all the designs, and in some cases all I really did was ink Mike's pencils. In other cases (like with the cat here) I had to be a bit more creative, but I was following their lead the whole time. The objective was to blend invisibly with the material that was actually drawn by Mike Krahulik... if I did my job right, nobody would know I'd done anything at all.

It wasn't really your style, but it blended perfectly. It's a great display of your versatility. Kudos.
A lot of your characters are great fantasy renditions, (perfect as Wizards of the Coast illustrations) Do you, or did you do any table top gaming growing up?

Li'l bit. It wasn't easy to find players, and even when you do you have to run the gamut of player-types that aren't always conducive to a good storytelling adventure game (the sort I wanted play). I still eat up the materials from time to time, and it's had an obvious influence on my work as an adult, but it's not something I do currently.

Right on. Thanks for indulging my curiosities. I just so enjoy your work.
Well I'll keep an eye on your Journal, and when I see you've started taking work again, you'll probably hear from me.
