Description I like that Animation finally has a category of its own, and that it seems well-rounded.

At any rate, this was a rejected sequence for a bit of software coming from Plato Japan (creators of, not coincidentally, Jam Sessions DS, another game in which some artwork of mine appears) called (I think) Bilingua, and it's intended to help people learn a new language. Essentially we did a whole mess of various animations for various verbs, and the software plays the animation in conjunction with the words in order to help the user associate new words with visual terms.

Hey, not everything an animator does is hot action excitement.

This one I rather liked, partly because we were able to design the animation with a grand total of about five drawings, not including the way the text itself is being "written", which isn't a series of frames so much as it is one drawing (the text line) which is gradually revealed frame by frame to create the illusion of being produced by the hand and pencil. The whole text block then shifts upward and the cycle begins anew.

The hand and the pencil are randomized and pushed from left to right... the end result doesn't look like a randomized cycle (at least not unless you look closely), but it allows us to create a longer sequence with a minimal amount of drawings, and that's usually a good thing.

The final sequence as it appears in the software has several subtle differences from this one, but I'll be danged if I can remember 'em all. I think part of it involved not leaving the hand disembodied, which we were told is one of those subtle Asian cultural taboos that makes people slightly uncomfortable. I don't know how prevalent that really is, but it came down from the Japanese clients, so I gotta take it at face value. You learn something new every day, huh?

A specific question to which I am specifically instructed not to answer specifically. Sorry...

Before we went digital it was all paper and light-tables, and the craft hasn't really changed a lot from then. It's still just keys and tweens, and you can draw that in most anything.

Nope, just keys & tweens. I think I concentrated too much on finger movement over the wrist, but I figure different people write differently, and it seems to read well enough.

Ooh, very nice. No, not everything an artist does is exciting 'thrill-a-minute' type stuff. Like being a book illustrator. Sounds awesome 'till you get disembodied skeletons and organs: [link]

Haha... yeah, I should make people check out my reams and reams of spot crap from my activity and phonics book days... apple, ape, book, cat, circus, dog, easle, exit... I lost count of how many little spot drawings I made in those years, but it must of have been thousands.

Part of it, anyhow. We're split between Tampa and NYC, some production takes place here and some up there, depending on what it be.

How does one go about applying for a PA job at the Tampa house?

You need an online portfolio and demo reel, for starters, and they need to reflect that you're currently skilled to the point that you can serve as an effective asset during production. If you're looking for school credit, there's something established for that, but all of it needs to be referred to the Studio Director.

I think the drawing skills displayed in your DA gallery are such that you'd be a viable candidate, but I'm not seeing any animation work there. If you don't have any animation education or an impressive indication of self-motivated production experience, that puts you back some, though... there's not a lot of time for teaching over there, but for people who want to learn there's plenty of opportunity for experience in the trenches. There's always a need for in-betweeners, but we need people already versed in the basics of animation... complete novices take too much time to bring up to speed.

If you have a reel or you're currently attending an animation program at a college, send me a Note and I'll see if I can't forward you to the Studio Director who makes decisions on who to bring into the house. Otherwise, I'd say that a tablet, a copy of Easytoon or Photoshop, and a copy of Richard Williams' book The Animator's Survival Kit is a good way to start learning the basics of the craft, and with a lot of practice you can teach yourself a good deal about the fundamentals.

Wow - Thanks for that info.

I don't have experience animating, and am not in school. The route I'm hoping to take in an artistic career is storyboard artist. I don't know of many companies that hire inexperienced storyboardists just based on comic samples, regardless if the panels are done in a wide cinematic panel. Since I'm moving to LA in 3 years, to try and get a job at a studio as a PA, I'd given thought to trying to get some PA work (making copies, doing set-ups, and assistant work) at one of the studios in Fla for that time and work my way up to storyboard artist if possible.

Inkthinker In reply to myopicmalcontent [2008-03-16 01:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Ah... well, there's less of a need for storyboard people, but if you have a portfolio of existing boards, collect 'em up and let me know, and I'll give you someone to send that to.

There's not much need for Production Assistants at the studio, simply because it's a small enough operation that if someone needs a copy of something, they can bloody well get up and make it themselves. But they do take on interns from time to time, and it never hurts to put your name into the system.

Haha, no disembodied hands. Quite understandable, considering the recent zombie uprisings in the southern regions of Japan. Cultural taboos fascinate me.

Well done, btw. (argh! disembodied thumbs-up)

Haha... yeah, I don't know how seriously to take it, but it's what they came back with. It was a very weird working relationship, considering everything had to go through a translator here at the company, and even he said it was "one of those things that's hard to explain". A lot of fun, though.

I'm not sure... I'm not working on that project at this time.

So far as I know, it's trapped in some sort of post-production limbo. All I can say is that I completed the animation for two more episodes, and they'll be put online at some point or another. When it happens, I'll let folks know about it.

Hey, don't take my word for it... it's just part of the feedback we got; no disembodied anything, hands or otherwise. The final has an arm that leads out-of-frame.
