Description
Day and night
In an eternal pursuit about the earth.
Hunted by a wolf.
Making sure to bring in the tides.
To keep the ocean streams going.
To keep the earth rotation stable.
That is him.
The moon.
Brother of the sun.
Part of all the same myths.
The fact that in Norse mythology the moon is male, and the sun female, is rather unusual.
That being said, it might just be because in old Norse...
And in the Scandinavian languages of today for that matter...
Sol is a feminine word, whereas Måne is masculine
En sol - sola. (A sun- the sun, feminine ending)
En måne - månen. (A moon- the moon, masculine ending)
That might just as well be the explanation.
Sol and her brother måne is essentially doing the same job though.
They both drive a chariot.
In both cases it is uncertain wether they are the celestial bodies which they represent, or if they are merely carrying them over the sky.
They are both chased by an enormous wolf. (They each have their own wolf following them)
With such a radiant sister, Måne is easily underestimated.
But without him, our oceans would lie stagnant and dead.
Our planet would tilt up and down. Sometimes even lying on its side.
And don't even get me started on the climatic effects of that.

Really cool use of the mythology! I always wanted to draw Rimfaxe because I think the story about it's breath becoming frost in the grass (such a striking image), but I was never very happy with the sketches so I never got there. This is such a cool picture though - well done
