Description This was a painting of working on for a few weeks. I know I haven't really been painting as much as I wanted to do too College stuff keep popping up from time to time. This was a piece I did for the (belated) 86th anniversary of the One-Eyed Whirlwind of Fisticuffed Fury, Popeye The Sailor (aka The Original One Punch Man). The part of him on the right is from his first appearance the "January 17th, 1929" strip of Trimble Theatre and the color piece is from his recent appearances. I had to pretty much work with a old model sheet of him from the Max Fleischer cartoons and the reference from my old collection of E.C. Segar's old comics and sketches. I really wish that I did better on this painting to be honest.

I think the detail is great~! You know what the early Popeye looked like in the original strips & he was really gruff & grubby in early days... Segar based him in part on an old Civil War vet whom he knew as "Rocky"... Before I was robbed I used to have the 1978 "Popeye; The first 50 years" book by Bud Sagendorf (who was Segar's young assistant & apprentice), & there was a photo of the old boy in the book & he looked like your rendering here!
So, in a way, Popeye has aged pretty well, by 1932 he had kind of evolved into what we sort of now know & the cartoons streamlined him a bit more... I like it!
Oh dear, by that token I am guessing Olive Oyl must have gone through the change sometime in the early 70's?

True that lol actually seen the photo of the man who inspired Popeye. I think they even include his picture in one of the archives I collect as well. They are basically has a whole collection of EC Segar's comics from over the years before he died. I think that Popeye was actually in his forties and Olive was slightly younger than him if I remember. They might be the same age since they both went to school with each other in a lot of the other incarnations

Yeah; that book had a few pages of vital statistics for us detail/trivia fans..... I recall it gave height & weights & Popeye's hair is supposed to red...things like that...

Oh yeah; while I have you here, I notice a ton of Red Dwarf items come through your tumblr... It makes me think of the time I walked into a hotel bar & met Craig Charles & Danny John-Jules.. Did I ever tell you this?
Very nice guys & very fun & fan friendly! They were doing a convention event & the following day & I got to tag along... Well, one thing I talked to them about was a love of old comedy & both told me they thought W.C. Fields was a master... This was in May of 1998, & Craig talked about being caught holding a firearm...he was a gun nut... & had to do time for it! So, there was that & some of their friends (up here) were Jamakin & they were saying some of the beer was piss & I knew of a little import beer & wine shop & got them some Red Stripe! I was a hero. It thrilled 'em, anyway I have pictures tucked away --ones I took & I got them to autograph a picture like ya fan bois do, of course! I also got an autographed CD of Danny's "Tongue Tied" & "Red Dwarf Theme" Ep.... Fwah, I need to post these pics... How strange to drink beer & watch Red Dwarf --then have (unexpectedly) beers with a couple of the crew was surreal....Boys from dah dwarf...

But that made me think of a britcom I had seen about 25 years ago (!) ..so that also makes me feel dangerously old... but the point being... Have you ever seen Chris Barrie in The Brittis Empire?

Hey I remember that show! Battle of the TV show that Chris Barrie had played a strict father with something of a military attitude. I've been meaning to watch the show for a while since I've seen every episode of Red Dwarf from season I-X I even seen Back on Earth as well. Also cool story on that part! I actually heard that Chris Charles was a gun nut at one of his stand up shows lol I didn't really figure it to be true, but comedy usually does lead to story. One of my dreams actually is to cosplay as The Cat for a while. I can I actually tried to do a decent impression of him as well. I just wish I had the looks XD

I have to remember to seek it out when I go into Youtube mode... Time robber for me, but they may have it there, The Brittis Empire Had Barrie running a gym, & he was a bit like Basil Fawlty... it was a funny show, but I don't think there were more than a series or two at that.... I cannot recall if he had kids in show or not... I recall an old maintenance worker who was something of a Baldrick type & two male staff members at the gym who may have been gay, but it was only implied -- Mr. Brittis was clueless! Heeh!
(Another fun old one to find would be "Piglet Files" )
Oh, You know I do go on about radio shows as done by the BBC, well, there was a series of "Red Dwarf", however it was all voiced by Barrie, who is an expert mimic & did the voices of Lister, Cat, Kryten & the first Hollie... This was done around 1995, I think...And while I am waxing nostalgic on all of this... Did you know.... That at some point... around 1998-99 maybe--? Well, sometime ago, the BBC re digitized all those early shows & updated some of the special effects? New credits as well...They look a bit odd & they have the air of an old Dr. Who series about them.. I can't watch them... I have no idea why they did that, and this was just before HD TV had taken hold.... Anyway, it would be interesting for the fans to be able to see the shows as they originally were! I know I had some on my old VHS tapes, & during the Red Dwarf Marathon on our local PBS was your host for the evening; A young, balding Unknown fan who was something of a comedy/actor... Joel McHale! Wearing big glasses with black frames & this was in the 1990s! He was loosing his hair then! He looks pretty good these days, man what money can do... Yeah, I forgot he was in that, but he also used to play in a local comedy show on TV here in the Seattle area .... So just one of those things.. Perhaps I'll blackmail him...I don't know yet..

Well, if you can't Cat; there's always Dwayne Dibbley! (Thermos---check..)

XDD true on that part. I've always thought about doing Duane Dibbley as well. I think there was actually similar British TV shows like that by the name of Bottom, Young Ones, and The New Salesman. I would love the fact that British humor is pretty much just darker versions of American humor and slapstick comedy. Speaking of which, I've always wanted to watch every episode of Married With Children even the spin off at some point. Also I remember that! There was like a series of Red Dwarf audio books that Chris Barrie had did all the voices of all the characters from the show. I even love the fact that the novels gave a lot more of their birth story and information on all the characters especially The Boys From The Dwarf along with adding in the dark tone and sort of giving a lot more of an effect they could have done in the TV show but weren't able to

Yes, that's right...I forgot, but there were a series of books! Wait...A spin of from Married--? Was it the show with Christina Applegate?

Well there's actually two spin off of Married With Children. Christina Applegate originally was going to be in a Friends Parody called Enemies. One of them actually what about her boyfriend though. Also I think they were actually four or five books for Red Dwarf

Ah gotcha, I vaguely recall "What about the boyfriend" thing.... I recall she was good in that & now that I think about it, there was also comic book of "Married With.." around then... I used to have a couple of issues, I used to pick up various comics that interested me then, because they were getting so good around then... (The 90s were so good!!) Ewee..I am getting old here..anyway..

"The New Statesman" with the late great (Drop Dead Fred) Rik Mayall is brilliant, it was Maggie Thatcher's 1980's & he was so funny in that outrageous sitcom. Doing bumps of coke & any woman in his path, it was a hoot, especially the earlier ones & look for cameos by Hugh Laurie & Stephen Fry among others...I wonder what the real members of parliament made out of it..

I used to buy VHS tapes of this one in the 1990's from Canada because  A.) they had them & B.) it wasn't really shown much over here. It wasn't a BBC production (London Weekend Television), so that seemed to make it harder to come by. My buddy's English Aunt sent us some tapes too, & we had them converted, so you see it was worth it!

"Bottom" came along in the 1990's, with Rik Mayall & his longtime comedy partner Ade Edmondson. Best remembered the 1980's cult classic "The Young Ones", these two guys went on to do a few things (not too well remembered but) always good for a laugh..("Filthy, Rich & Catflap"  --- "The Dangerous Brothers")
However "Bottom" was something of an institution with sold out stage shows in the UK that were a bit like rock concerts! The humor is pure slapstick, (Block out any memories of Laurel & Hardy, here) but more cartoon-like violent slapstick .... Think Three Stooges on crack... It's "refreshingly laddish" (misogynistic) but it's so over the top, you just go with it & have a good a laugh... The Live shows are raunchier than the TV series, as you can imagine... fun stuff..

I uploaded some pix to:
rik-and-ade-bollocks.deviantar…
That page is ran by a Norwegian fanboy/artist who is  also into cosplay, but he is into these old  Brit-coms as much as me & neither of us are British, & so  I say we are misfits, but we write long messages sharing info back & forth...like ya do...

So I hope you seek these out!
If you find you are falling way into it, let me know, as I have put up Rik Mayall's last radio work "Interview with a Snowman" on soundcloud & no one has asked me to take it down yet...

Also, I discovered "clyp it" an audio sharing website... Since there seems to be a ton of old records & vintage pop music used in video games, I thought I'd try to share some from my 78s, so if want a listen to something different while doing artwork.... Tumblr wouldn't let me upload the songs, as it thinks they are professional tracks already copyrighted... well as a record collector an audio engineer, I made these so people could download them in CD audio quality.... I have found a record by Billy Costello from 1932... He was the original voice of Popeye before Jack Mercer...but he played the uke & sang goofy scat... His recording of "Nobody's Sweetheart Now" is one in the same as the performance in the 1932 Betty Boop M.D. cartoon... After I heard it there was no doubt... Some people credited it to Cliff Edwards, but it couldn't have been him as he was well-known & in Hollywood at that time & the Fleisher's were in New York... anyway... I am going crazy..
