Description Artist's Training Grounds Alumni Group - Week 3 - Poison Joke.

One's first steps are made without thought,
And the results are often not what one sought.
Zecora's first encounter with this well-named Joke,
A plant not known to any pony-folk,
resulted in a wash of her stripes and mane,
making such a strange Zebra appear very plain.
Even her cutie mark was affected,
it's lines straightened and meaning deflected.

Into Ponyville she went, expecting to be greeted with fear,
but instead the reaction was filled with cheer,
The ponies didn't call her mysterious, sinster, or spooky,
no random Pink ponies sang songs so kooky.
The trip wasn't the same, the reactions felt like lies,
She couldn't help but cringe at her forced disguise.
Zecora could shop and buy every item she had come to seek,
but in the end, she'd rather be shunned, and still be unique.

Zecora's Stripes. They're gone

Poor Zecora, her mane's so bare, now she's not the same mystery mare. Something worse that Poison Oak, that's the Poison Joke.

What a fantastic little Rhyme.
Send that to Hasbro. NAO. NO JOKE.

I always think my rhymes are a crime,
But they make me laugh, so I take the time.
I type them up and put them on screen,
It can seem so silly (if you know what I mean)
But if delight the poem did bring,
Then I thank you for the praise you sing!

A bit surprised she looks indeed
sans her stripes, a different breed
A naked zebra is all the rage
I'm so happy I clicked to this page!

Nice work! I like the unwound cutie mark. I'm just wandering through the other submissions in last week's ATG [link] and Zecora's un-striped flank caught my eye.

Unstriped was the joke I chose to make,
and denied Zecora her unique flank.
There were so many others who drew with stripes
of multiple colors of so many types,
Her colors made neon, blue, and pink,
but I must admit, my favorite is [link]

There was an odd zebra, Zecora
who rhymed so oft it might boreya
but because of a plant
rhyming she desires, but can't!
so now she just looks cute wandering naked around the Everfree Forest and flirting with passing giraffe.

Very well done. She looks quite surprised.

I have 4 ideas that I wrote down when this theme was announced, and so far two of them have been done by others (this being one of them). I really ought to draw mine, before they have all been done.

I had the same happen actually, I was amazed at how quickly a couple really good ideas I had got taken, and it kind of derailed me a few days. At least you've got two more to fall back on!

Hehe, a very intriguing take on the theme.
A very, shall we say, interesting scheme.

Zecora looks very much out of her loop.
And then some very good poetry to boot.

I like how you managed this particular brainfart.
Besides, there can never be enough Zecora fanart.

Invidlord In reply to CrazedCollie [2011-07-15 21:52:27 +0000 UTC]

Zecora definately needs more fanart, it's true,
Of background ponies, as a favorite she's grew,
That grammar's not so good, but as a rhyme it'll do...
Anyway, here's hoping for more Zecora in season two!

Without her stripes Zecora looks so strange,
That blue flower brought about this change.
Those ponies seem so shallow to judge by looks,
Did they learn nothing from Twilight's books?
Nopony wants to live a lie,
And to their true character deny.

Invidlord In reply to Fetchbeer [2011-07-15 22:00:19 +0000 UTC]

It's a lesson of its own, to be proud of one's self,
To wear your heart on your sleeve, not hidden on a shelf.
Zecora seems so strong of character, brave and true,
Of those ponies who judge her, she'll have little to do.
It's truely a trait that gains respect in my eye,
It's why I go proudly, and let my brony flag fly!

So she became a pony after touching the poison joke? Nice.

Invidlord In reply to Cosmeon [2011-07-15 21:39:51 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's the heart of it! I tried to think of Zecora's best outstanding characteristic, and I felt it was pretty obviously the fact that she's a zebra amidst ponies, so the poison joke is to strip that uniqueness away. In my mind, I think Zecora is pretty confident in herself and who she is, and wouldn't try to hide what she is just to get others to like her or accept her. If they don't, their loss.

Thanks, I was suprised how well Zecora came out, and then I almost feel like I'm cheating by not adding the stripes as part of the theme, heh.

ArtofChase In reply to Invidlord [2011-07-15 23:13:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm kind of afraid to ask, since my project is almost done, but do the blue poison flowers have a face, and and/or a practicular malicious effect? I have bene working blind and madesomething I really like... but it might not fit in the theme at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Invidlord In reply to ArtofChase [2011-07-15 23:45:19 +0000 UTC]

No face or anything like that, I just suck at drawing background detail. The Poison Joke isn't truly malicious, the effect of the flowers is usually an ironic 'joke', hence the name. Each pony is affected differently, but it tends to disable or reverse something that defines their character, such as Pinkie Pie losing the ability to talk.

And I'd say even if it doesn't fit the theme, if you like the idea, upload it. I don't think the guidelines are all 'that' strict

your pony designs are fantastic, though! and I think your background ferns are very striking. it gives your work a lot of character!

Invidlord In reply to ArtofChase [2011-07-16 02:53:46 +0000 UTC]

Aha, thank you! But you see, those ferns are cheats
I've used the My Little Brushy pack [link] created by

I love the thing, because I walk a fine line between not wanting to spend time on doing a background (because drawing ponies is way more fun), but I can't stand having my ponies standing in void space whiteness. It provides some nice straight-from-the-show elements to give the backgrounds that authentic, real background, look.

neat! i draw all that stuff by mouse 'cause I'm too stupid to make brushes work. Plus, my Photoshop version is super-old. they probably aren't compatible. -_-;

Invidlord In reply to ArtofChase [2011-07-16 03:53:47 +0000 UTC]

Heh, been there... actually, still there on a lot of stuff. I actually have been using The Gimp program to do my stuff, its a freeware image program, not as pretty as Photoshop, but it can get the same jobs done. I just can't afford Photoshop right now.

I've just been teaching myself using the tutorials they have on their page, [link] as well as just messing around on my own. The progam is pretty intimidating at first, but once I started getting the idea of where it put things and how it reacted, things got easier.

The poem was awesome. And the art is awesome as well...

But I can't help but think of how naked Zecora looks.

Invidlord In reply to DI-FL [2011-07-15 21:46:30 +0000 UTC]

It was almost a shame to draw Zecora and then not fill in her stripes... I may have to go back and do an alternate 'correct' version at some point.

I kind of hate poetry as well, but I don't feel like I can do Zecora any justice without writing up a post like that. I'll refrain myself from doing it in the comments, ha ha. Glad you liked it!
