[...] Ready to accept this fate Ben’s thoughts suddenly shifted. Rey had saved him from death once, something Ben had believed to be impossible. Placing one hand on her body he realised he could bring her back to life. He hadn’t much left to give and Ben knew that this would take the very last of his powers. But he was ready to die – for Rey. Ben reached out to the Force. There wasn’t much life around them to take from as there had been in the wild ocean, so he focused all of his lifeforce on Rey, finding reservoirs he didn’t even know were there. The Force was moving. For a moment there was perfect balance, both of them equal in their power if even so little and weak. And then Rey’s hand found his. Ben had done it. Ben gave Rey back to the galaxy.
(Phrase taken from TROS novelisation… I guess. Haven’t read the book… only seen some posts about it on IG.)
Rey suddenly awoke. She didn’t know what had happened. Maybe she had died, being one with the Force now, like every Jedi before her. But as she tried to move, her whole body hurt again and she recalled where she was. Expecting to be lying on a cold ground, she instead found herself surrounded by energy, the warmth of a body, and instinctively reached for the warm spot on her belly. The Force had already told her, but she has been too tired to see it. Ben was holding her in his arms, searching her with his eyes. He came back, Rey thought and wondered how he had managed to do so, feeling the terrible pain he was in. Surprised, Rey rose to sit at eye level, freeing Ben of her additional weight on his body. He watched her closely. Rey looked at him, but for some reason she couldn’t read him… at all. His eyes were on her but out of focus.
“Ben?” Rey said, a smile on her face as she spoke out his name. But he didn’t reply, nor did he show any reaction. Something was wrong. And suddenly his body collapsed backwards, as if his muscles gave up their strength. Ben was growing cold and Rey realised why. When she had healed him she has been exhausted because she had lost some of her lifeforce. Now he must have done the same, only that this bit of lifeforce was the last bit he had left to give her.
“Ben, let me help you.” Rey’s voice was full of worry. But Ben rejected her offer, his voice slowly drifting off.
“No, Rey… I… no… I gave you all of my strength… go.” His state was critical.
“I’m not leaving you. Not this time.” Rey assured him but saw that she couldn’t do anything. This wasn’t a game of the Force one could play forever. Rey took his hand, the hand he had wanted her to take from the very beginning, and in that moment she learned that a life without him would be incomplete and unbalanced. [...]
