[...] It was like the moment they had touched hands, so peaceful and intimate. It finally felt right. It felt like coming home, where he belonged to. Their eyes were locked into each other, neither of them wanting this moment to ever end. Rey remembered it, too. She had wanted to touch his hand, his face, his hair and found herself finally doing it. You came back, she whispered, her hand touching the place where she had left the scar once. It had healed when she had given him some of her lifeforce after their fight, but she remembered it as if it had never disappeared.
Ben thrilled when Rey touched his face. He has never let anyone near him in years and he had already trembled when they had touched hands. But this was more than he had ever imagined to experience. Believing that this moment couldn’t be more surreal than it already was, Rey leaned in and kissed him. Shocked and surprised at first he accepted the kiss and wrapped his arms around her, the cut on Ben’s lip making it taste like blood. But neither of them bothered. No one could take this moment away from them. It felt like… finally. (Making a little Chaos Walking reference here )
After breaking the kiss – what felt like an eternity – both of them were speechless. The Force was filled with happiness and joy. This is how it should have always been, how it should have been from the very beginning.
A big smile appeared on Ben’s face – something Rey never thought she would experience in person – laughing in relief. Rey reached out to caress the beautiful sight, stroking his smile with her thumb. She was smiling as well, but also starting to avoid eye contact. Her cheeks turned red, the hint of embarrassment in her expression. She felt uneasy, almost nervous. She had never kissed anyone before. It had come out of nowhere. But when she aspired to speak Ben gently moved his left hand to her cheek.
“N-No, no. Don’t say anything.” Ben mumbled exhausted. He was baffled. His expression was bright and Rey couldn’t believe how much Ben sounded like his father. His fair countenance flattered her but she knew he was overwhelmed by the situation.
Subduing her petty fear of shame, Rey threw herself into his arms – she had already forgotten about his broken ribs – and they clumsily collapsed under their weight. Ben managed to catch himself on his elbow and sighed, obviously feeling uncomfortable, both because of his pain and the contact. But he did not reject her and allowed himself to relish this moment. It would be a long path but there was no going back now. Ben would stay with her and learn to accept and love the way he used to. He would learn to be himself again. The only problem left, as it turned out to be the biggest problem in fact, was the Resistance. [...]
