The Erstewhile

An erstewhile is created when the two souls of an erebus separate, becoming two erstewhile. Erstewhile have a single, whole human soul, and for that reason, they have very human qualities.

They have the entire spectrum of human emotions.

Erstewhile are social creatures, and will actively seek other erstewhile. If they cannot find their own kind, they will take to befriending forest creatures, and sometimes even humans. Erstewhile are very nurturing creatures, and will treat these as their children.

Erstewhile are detested by erebus, and are often attacked by them. They collect scars from their encounters with erebus, and will sometimes even lose limbs. Erebus completely heal from their wounds, erstewhile do not.

Newly created erstewhile are sought out by Ereliste, the creator of all erebus. She will capture them, and gouge them; destroying their internal reproductive organs, leaving an ugly scar on the lower stomach. Because of this, the majority of erstewhile cannot reproduce.

Every erstewhile has a symbol, branded, cut, burned or tattooed into their skin. This symbol represents how they were once erebus, and how they now contain a single human soul.
