Description
Riley's pride and joy "LMS 4-6-0 Black 5 44871" driven by the legendary Mick Kelly (visible), closely followed by LMS Jubilee Class 5690 "Leander" driven by the equally legendary Uncle Albert (also visible) thunder through Furness Vale with the Buxton Express, just ahead of a very large storm front.

Thanks for the critique
so would you suggest a much tighter crop to improve this image ?

Possibly, yes. But not if the crop leaves the center of the train in the center of the picture. I like to use the rule of thirds in composition, which says divide the canvas in thirds both horizontally and vertically and locate the "center" of your image on one of those axes. That's not a hard and fast rule, obviously, but it works as a starting point for alignments if you don't have a definite plan in mind. When shooting photos, I try and shoot in that division of thirds, or leave enough space around the image that I can crop to change the balance of the image. Balance and composition are extremely subjective and difficult to explain - especially balance, I think it helps to play around with centering some of your own images to get a feel for it.

That steam coming of the train looks really good. I like how you took these shots. Makes the trains look like very strong machines

brought back memories of "The Daisy" chugging past my bedroom when I was a 5 year old child in Richmond Australia...loved the trains then with the pictures inside in wooden frames, the brass water holders and all that polished wood! Wonderful photo!

Rainy days are great, no big heavy pesky shadows to worry about and it keeps the amateurs in their houses

Brilliant way to pull contrast out of such a cloudy day! Everything else is pretty much darn near perfect. The only way it MIGHT be made better is to give it a VERY light HDR treatment to perhaps make the metal surfaces shine a bit (if possible), imo.
