Yes, it is a guide/check rail. I think it also prevents the tightly curved track from distorting too.

Ah, thought so.
Pity, that we don't do that here... but then again, that would cost many millions to upgrade the lines to such standards...

The sound of 500 nails being scrapped down a blackboard is a very common sound in the British countryside, it's a shame you don't have the opportunity to hear it over there.
The latest example is our "beloved" metrolink (seen here... [link] imagine that ever 5 minutes for 16 hours a day. )

Ah, the Jacobite! I am very happy to have ridden that train on that route. The scenery is fantastic, even without the Glennfinan viaduct.

Agreed, I didn't get to glenfinnan for the first two days because I had so many other angles/locations to play with.

I can understand that. It's impossible to go a mile on the parallel road without finding another great vantage point.

Do you ever get used to them ? I came home looking like a game of minesweeper...

Luckily for me, where I live does not get them...yet, the village down the road (7 miles away) is plagued by them.
Here's tip for you...use a product called 'Skin So Soft' by 'Avon'...the midges hate it and the little buggers will leave you alone.

Thanks, I tried insect repellent, tea tree oil and a big coat to no avail. Was thinking flame thrower, but I'll try Avon first.
The bats, swifts and swallow were doing their best to keep the numbers down, but some of the "little" buggers were about the same size.

Haha!
The Avon stuff does work...you might smell a little 'girly'...but I'd rather live with that, than be sucked dry by the darn things!
