Description LMS Princess Class 4-6-2 no 46201 Princess Elizabeth travels over uppermill viaduct, Oldham. on her way to Crewe after leaving the N.R.M. York.

This is a rare occasion of me posting an image on the same day that I took it.

WIN light consist there. I love seeing rather large engines hauling only one or two carriages or coaches, theres a certain endearing quality to that.

She was coasting, so she sounded fine.

Strange, she sounded as if she was struggling yesterday, and that was on a slight downhill section.

When you say she was sounding rough, how so? I'm just curious...

Not so much sounding rough Matt, as sounding as if she was labouring, and with the throttle almost wide open, having a struggle to haul the train on the slight downhill incline.

I would say that she sounded rather like a J27 hauling a set of full coal wagons uphill, on a long steep incline.

It could well have been the extra weight of the Class 47 on the rear end that was making it difficult. Either that or the 47 driver had his brakes on !!!

How many coaches was she pulling?
Also, was the entire train on a downhill, or had she just crested a summit?
Sorry to be so demanding, I'm just curious

I didn't actually count the coaches, but I think it was either 8 or 9, including the support coach, and then the Class 47 on the end of those. The whole train was on a downhill section, and where we were standing was about half a mile from a right hand bend which leads from a reasonably level section.

I don't mind your curiosity at all Matt, after all it might help to understand why she sounded the way she did.

Hmm, will 8 or 9 with a 47 gives a trailing load of 11 or 12. Not out of the question for a class 12, especially on a down hill.
The only thing that I can suggest is that maybe the driver hadn't "wound her back" and she was still close to full forward.
Unless there is something wrong with her

A suggestion from my colleague is that she might have been low on steam, after being held back for regular services, and heading onto the slow line (as she did) to build up a good head of steam there.
