Toola Roola and Coconut Crème had been friends since before they could remember, quickly becoming best friends in their childhood. Sure, they had the occasional fight that could turn rather nasty, but they were always quick to forgive and forget. When Toola Roola started to get frequently sick, and later diagnosed with a life-threatening autoimmune disease, Coconut visited her at the hospital every chance she could get. She also regularly gave her homework assignments from school, so she wouldn't fall behind. The last thing Toola Roola wanted to do was homework, and was more than pleased to realize that all she had to do was put her name on the assignments, since Coconut Crème would do the homework for her while explaining it all to her bestie. The two drew pictures, made friendship bracelets, read books, and did anything they could to pass the time. When her hair started falling out due to treatment, Toola Roola's confidence nose-dived. She was worried that her school friends would judge her, and it seemed like the fear began to eat her up. Unable to just sit around while her best friend lost hope, Coconut Crème spent every last dollar of her allowance on a wig set. When she presented it to Toola Roola, she sheepishly admitted that she couldn't afford a matching set, but how badly she wanted her to feel better. Toola Roola told her that the wigs were perfect and how much she loved all the fun colors, wandering around the hospital with Coconut Crème to show off her new hair to anyone who would look at her in the children's ward.

When Toola was finally able to come home from her lengthy stay at the hospital, her parents decided to throw a small party for her with classmates and family. So many foals from school were so happy to see her again, giving her plenty of 'we missed you' cards and enthusiasm to see her on the playground again. Toola Roola did her best to resume life like a normal filly, but she was still more sick and weak than the average child. She had to make sure to take care of herself, rather than going all out with every last bit of energy like she could have before. But Coconut Crème never left her side, always talking about "who wants to get all gross and sweaty outside during recess when we can play with the paint inside?". The two continued to be best friends through foalhood to young adulthood, somewhere in between there deciding that they wanted to be part of each other's lives in every way possible. No one was surprised when they ended up being romantically involved with each other, knowing no two ponies loved each other in every way more than Coconut and Toola.

After the couple had moved in together the moment they were able, Toola Roola reconnected with a pony who she had seen regularly in the children's ward of the hospital when she was young. Lightning Flare, who had intense allergies that sent him to the hospital more often than he would have liked, was more than happy to see his old buddy. The two enjoyed each other's company immensely, and he regularly had dinner with Toola and her girlfriend. When Toola Roola started developing feelings for Lightning Flare, she worried that she would be pulled two different ways and have no way of choosing between her friends. When she admitted her feelings to Coconut Crème, she was answered with her girlfriend's knowing smile and a big hug. Apparently, Toola was a bit more obvious in her affections than she thought, leading to more embarrassment from her. But to her surprise, Coconut had no issue with her girlfriend also having another partner. The next time they invited Lightning Flare over, they all discussed the situation and came up with a plan that fit all of them. Toola Roola had two wonderful partners to love completely, and over time, Coconut Crème and Lightning ended up growing close and becoming interested in each other two.

After a few years, Lightning Flare was invited to move in with them, which he happily accepted. Life seemed pretty great for the three of them. Toola stayed home most of the time to work on her paintings, Coconut commuted to to the city for her job as a baker, and Lightning Flare focused his days on doing most of the chores around the house and his nights on his music career. The three occasionally had to deal with Toola Roola's fluctuating health, regularly taking her to the hospital to make sure she was alright. But just as soon as they started to build a regular schedule as a polycule, their world got flipped upside down in a way that excited them all. Coconut Crème was expecting their first baby and they all showed their enthusiasm in different ways. Toola Roola was quickly turning their spare bedroom into a nursery, even when her partners reminded her not to work herself too hard. Lightning Flare was also intent on preparing for the baby, reading enough books about raising a foal to rival Twilight's knowledge on the subject. Coconut Crème, on the other hand, took everything in stride, just going with the flow for the majority of her pregnancy. She worked at her job in Canterlot until she was ready to pop, and her partners finally convinced her to take a bit of time off since the baby's due date was so close. Not a week after Coconut took family leave, she went into labor. Neon Bop was born, looking like the spitting image of his father until he started sprouting hair. The polycule's world now revolved around their little colt and with all of Lightning Flare's learned knowledge of babies, the three seemed to quickly adapt to life with a newborn.

The three expected to just have one child and didn't plan on having any others. The years passed and Toola Roola's health declined again, causing her to have to be admitted to the hospital like she had been as a filly. Coconut Crème and Lightning Flare tried to put their lives on hold for their partner, worrying for her endlessly, but she told them again and again how much she just wanted them to focus on life like normal. They did their best to act like everything usually was, but made sure to bring Neon Bop to visit her almost every day. Soon enough, during a doctor's visit of her own, Coconut Crème learned that she was pregnant again. She wasn't sure of how Toola would take it, not wanting to add to her worries, but her girlfriend was so happy she nearly jumped out of her hospital bed. She didn't tell her partners, but she could feel her health continue to decline, and something told her she wouldn't be getting better. Toola claimed the pregnancy kept her mind off of her sickness, and it made her feel so excited to have something big to look forward to when she got out. When Coconut Crème finally went into labor, Lightning Flare was running from the delivery room to Toola's room to keep everyone updated on the new baby. When Citrus Fizz was born, Toola Roola pushed herself to make it to her girlfriend's room, even though her nurses advised against it. She congratulated Coconut and Lightning, giving them both kisses while Neon Bop curiously stared down his little sister. Unfortunately, Toola Roola wasn't able to hold on much longer, and ended up passing away a week after Citrus was born. She was surrounded by everyone she loved when she left, holding her babies and partners close as she faded away.

Coconut Crème, Lightning Flare, and Neon Bop went into mourning, devastated by the loss of Toola Roola. Neon became withdrawn and quiet, using music as a major distraction even as a colt. Coconut and Lightning eventually managed to grow stronger than their grief, knowing that Toola Roola would never want them to waste their days wallowing in never-ending sorrow. And as it turned out, they seemed to have a piece of Toola with them always, as Citrus Fizz seemed to be a mini version of their late partner, with an incredibly creative spirit and a love for art.
