Description

All typed text in the drawings above is taken from The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. These quotations are included here as context for the images, which are meant to be a commentary on the work.

Credit also to pixelstains still water brush: www.deviantart.com/pixelstains… I wasn't going to draw all that by hand

The original intention was to doodle one Smeagol... one. I might have a little bit of a fondness for villain backstories. (good ones. ones that make sense. ones that provide what the villain’s rationale is but don’t try to say the evil things the villain did are okay)

The rationale for drawing Gollum this way is here:  itstheblob.tumblr.com/post/661…

I say there that if Gollum has clothing, he must be getting it from the orcs that live in the mountain- since whatever he was wearing when he went into the mountain must have fallen apart by now... But it seemed reasonable to me that, even if he’s able to get clothing, he probably would not have always had a reliable way to get clothing during every single point of his long lifespan. (The orcs didn’t live there when he first moved in, for one thing.) Ergo, here we have fully clothed Smeagol, and fully clothed terminal Gollum, but some raggedy half-dressed Gollums in between. Including some midriff Gollums. Gross!

Looking at it all together, it kind of gives me the overall effect that he’s slowly molting. Gross! As for Smeagol’s overall look, it’s mostly just reverse engineered from what I settled on for Gollum’s design (high cheekbones, narrow chin, small upturned nose, large oval eyes, etc) but uncreepified (and then slowly re-creepified). He also has an affinity for pretzel sitting, a cute little tooth gap, and an awkward lanky look- all of which will, in future, get way out of hand.  I thought it might be reasonable that he always had webbed feet, since 1) he’s related to an aquatic type hobbit 2) he’s not actually a hobbit, he’s an ancestor of hobbits. A troglodyte in every sense. I couldn’t find anything on the wikis or in the books to actively contradict this, though I did see that what eventually become known as Stoors have peach fuzz, ergo Deagol. So if you zoom in, you can see the proto-Stoors all have a little bit of webbing.

I don’t have many LOTR posts so here’s an index:
