Description
Macro of a snowflake in Yellowstone.EDIT: Guys this is being stolen all over the internet. I can't even express how upset I am right this second. So voila, big-ass watermark and tiny view. Chances are it's coming down eventually, but it's late and I have work in the morning.

Question, if you don't mind?
Is bright lighting absolutely necessary in macro?
Doesn't this force one to tone it down in post?

In a controlled setting with a subject that doesn't move, bright lighting wouldn't be necessary. Actually when I'm shooting macros of flowers or other static subjects in a studio setting I tend to use much more muted lighting that's highly controlled. But if you're shooting something like an insect or, as in this case, a snowflake, brighter lighting means a faster shutter, which makes it that much more likely that you'll capture a sharp image. If that makes any sense.

They really are. It's cool how something as simple as frozen water could make such a unique shape.

That is ridiculous! I have never seen a photo that's made me go WOW so much...
How hard was this to capture without it melting or blowing away??
Great stuff, a very well deserved DD. Keep it up!

Thanks so much for the comment!
It was pretty tough to capture. I think I have 150 frames that were all attempts to get a good angle and a good focus before the snowflakes melted, and out of those this one was the only one that was even remotely successful.

I've been into photography since I was about three, but I've only done it with any seriousness for about four years.

I didn't know snowflakes actually came in those shapes...XD I thought it was an artistic interpretation. WOOO, desert-dwellers!
