This actually matches my merrow. In that it's basically a mermaid but with more fish like features

Depends on what you consider pretty. I mean for me, I intended her to look feral and menacing.

And naturally they'd find the standard human-like mermaids ugly as sin. Always bothered me when non-human creatures are somehow attracted to human women. Don't get me started on fantasy races where males and females look like completely different species.

Yes, they certainly don't tend to find regular mermaids to be easy on the eyes at all.
Don't worry, the sexes of my fantasy races will have consistent similarities. The upper bodies of mermen will be those of handsome human men, female minotaurs will have bovine-like features like the men, male dryads will be very leafy men instead of flat out looking like the ents from Lord of the Rings, etc.Β

Or perhaps make it so that players can choose body types so that there can be both kinds? I mean it makes sense, right? Like why not be able to choose different body types? Almost all the male races are built like tanks. Heck, the forearms for the male human and night elf models are thicker than their calves for crying out loud! Blizzard needs to give the players the ability to make their characters slim, chunky, muscular, cheesecake/beefcake, etc.
