Page #3 of my guide to drawing mermaids! This one deals with how to draw the waist area between the mermaid's human torso and the fish tail.
A. You can simply have the scales begin at the waist. Many old works of art have merpeople with that style.
B. Don't make that little waist thing that DIsney mermaids have.
C. Fins around the waist can work very well and very tastefully. There are some renaissance style art that depict merpeople with fins around there waists.
D. Don't use belts around the waist area if it makes it look like the belt is part of the fish body. It just doesn't look right.
E. Don't blend the top with the fish body and make it look like the top is part of the mermaid body. This is very similar to using so much scales to cover up the mermaid's torso and making it look like the top of a dress.
F. This is more of an extra when using tops and clothing on mermaids. Armor can look cool. I would love to see more art with mermaid warriors wearing armor. I'm actually kind of proud how I drew this one because I'm not usually good with drawing armor. lol

You are most welcome.
I always love mixing up how I draw mermaids, they are quite interesting characters. And it's always fun to see different takes on them.
