Description
This is my first drawing in a series on how to properly draw mermaid characters for illustrations, video games, etc. This deals with the length of the mermaid's tail and how big or small her fins should be. As you can see, the ones with the symbol that you see on "No Smoking" signs is there to me that it is not a good way to go. The one with the check by it is that right way to go. You'll see this ALOT in upcoming images. lol
The mermaid's tail should be about the same length as the measurement between a woman's hips/waist and her toes. it's alright to maker her tail a little longer if you want, but don't go overboard and maker her tail all super long and serpentine-like. Make her tail to small....well, it just doesn't look right....
Her fins can be just about any size and width, as long as they aren't small than a pair of hands or as big as a garage door. LOL
P.S. I'm actually very proud of how I drew that long mermaid's tail. ROFL!^_^

Yeah, that one tends to be a fan favorite. I think I might do a full size drawing of her colored with copic markers.

I kinda like the one that looks like a serpent.
I imagine an old mermaid looking like that because she's lived so long and basically became a sea snake with fins.

Its not your job to decide how to draw mermaids ''properly''. Mermaids are mythological creatures with no basis of reality. You can't tell someone that a long flowy tail is impractical, because MERMAIDS are impractical.. (Although that short fin is pretty disturbing LOL)
While I agree that perhaps the ''correct'' on looks better, I don't think the long one is bad either. Old art of mermaids would often depict them with that tail, so you can't really say its bad?

Uh.... I think this is more focused on how to draw mermaids in a way to make them look natural. Even though they may not be real that doesn't mean anatomy holds no grasp on it.
Like unicorns, not real, but horse anatomy helps make drawing them more anatomically correct. Which is normally what looks appealing to the eyes.
And if you don't like it.... I mean you don't have to be a dick to someone trying to help teach others this stuff.

Ugh, I know.
Obviously past me was not in good mood at the time. I love seeing old stupid comments.
But I agree with you. I think the more natural a creature looks, the better.

I'm following these rules but mostly my merpeople's skin colors match their tail colors, only they're in pastels or in lighter shades. I like them to have their tails based on different species of fishes but they have no fins, only small fin ears that actually look like a fish's fins.Β

I'm new here. I joined the forum for this guide of how to draw mermaids. I manly know how to draw dragons. I'm trying to draw a logo for my blog. I was thinking a mermaid on an anchor or on a rock. How do I use this guide?

It's easy, just browse through the pictures one by one, read what is written on both the artwork, and in the description section, and follow those guidelines. Hope that was helpful.

I'm a long tail and large fins fan, just let people draw mermaids how they want instead of telling people whats 'right' and 'wrong'Β

Yeah, I'm actually kind of proud of how I did the blonde with the super long tail. Maybe some day I'll do an art piece featuring just her, but with more facial details. Just for the fans. ^_^

I like the long tail best 'cos it gives her an atmosphere of power. It's like a sea snake or a sea witch. A bit of danger

I can totally agree with people who like the long tailed mermaid best!^_^ I strongly feel like I did a great job on it! rofl! However, I do still feel that really long mermaid tails seem rather impractical. It's kinda complicated to explain, but I think long fish tails on a mermaid might make sense if the sea creature was more like a creature that was half snake-half fish, almost like a seaserpent, instead of a regular fish. Still, I'm glad you like it.

i agree with the rediculously long tails part, however my mermaids usually have longer than normal tails but it can still be classified as practical
