Description The old school is printing up some DVD's of my student film. I drew this for the cover.

Studying animation was fun, y'all. No regrets.

Yes. And I'm CERTAIN Miyazaki is a fan of that franchise.

OF COURSE HE IS. It's practically brimming with his trademark whimsy and innocence.

So pretty! Those textures are just rad.

I remember seeing that trailer ages ago... are we ever going to be able to see the full animation? I will throw money at your face, if it is necessary

I'm not sure when I'll be able to put the full movie online-- probably sometime this winter? But eventually all short films migrate to the great Youtube graveyards to die with dignity.

How your work reflects great subtlety in gesture.

BTW I work with Tyler Stott. Didn't realize you knew each other.

How cool that you work with Stott! He's pretty fantastic, huh? He was a few years ahead of my group in school, and we were all pretty much in awe of him. He was responsible for exposing me to a lot of really formative stuff.

So did you study or work in animation, Shane? I've noticed that you can just skip between styles and media like it's nothing and dominate them all, and most of the guys I know with that kind of facility have an animation background. Or were you just born scary?

Yeah...he's pretty damn good. I'm trying to steal his soul everytime he looks away. Nearly impossible though.
At least I can hopefully learn something from him.

Early on my career I worked for various licenses and so tapping into a given style was required. I only did it for a few years but it was enough to basically form who I am today. Somebody with an identity problem for editors/art directors...someone versatile enough to constantly be employed. It helps that I love all kinds of art and I'm constantly pulling and learning from various sources. I change styles like I change clothes. Whatever works for the job is what I work in.

It'd be nice though to work in development art for a animation/film studio though. I think it's that kind of discipline I'm working towards.

Lemme know if you get a piece of Stott's soul and are willing to share.

Yeah, I've been pushed into more of a 'signature style' than I'd like because of that art director situation. Picked a process and sterilized my online presence of anything that didn't fit. And now I doubt I could just move over to work in oils or ink without at least a month's adjustment and practice. It helps with getting freelance work, but it makes me look unemployable to most studios of any kind.

I still feel like it's a pretty awesome superpower to be able to change hats so freely (and to wear them all so well!).
