Description

Another Personal Project done, and I think I've found a problem with this series.

I'm trying to make fully coloured illustrations out of every piece, which sure will have a more polished result in the long run, but I think that's being counter productive. After all part of the creative process is always lost to you guys, most importantly the time spent on it. If an idea or concept is good, sometimes the execution is just adding more icing on the cake, which takes more time and results in an over-cumbered product.

An idea should speak on its own regardless of execution. See movies for example. Some of the most complex movies ever made are just people, in a room, talking about things. Then there's the most simplistic Hollywood movies that have over-long action scenes with the most complex special effects imaginable. All within context, but what I'm saying is that more isn't necessarily better, so expect the next couple of projects to be a lot more simple and rough in execution.

I first came across Ratatoskr when doing my weekly Folklore Thursday tweet, and discovered what a cool character it is. It's a Squirrel messenger going up and down the branches of Yggdrasil in Norse Mythology, exchanging messages between the eagle perched atop the tree, and the serpent Níðhöggr on the roots. The idea of small badass characters is something I'm a big fan of, and so I've been unable to get the idea out of my head. I am aware that Ratatoskr is also a character in the game SMITE , and it looks just as cool there, but I tried my own version with something closer to what a real squirrel looks.

Also yeah, Yggdrasil is an ash, not an apple tree, so it doesn't make any sense that apples are growing on the branches. I used them for the sake of perspective. But I was also brought to attention that many paintings representing Norse Mythology use apples as well, maybe because they are safe and easily recognizable.

Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments. I appreciate each and every single one I receive.

The Nords seemed to have a strange fascination of having characters in their mythology either be absurdly large, or itty bitty small.

They do, and to me that's what makes some of their myths so wonderful.
