Please read everything before asking questions. I understand this can be confusing, but I may have already answered your question.
This took me so long to make! You're welcome
Materials : (with links to purchase / more info)
• Paper : The paper is the most important part of the book, you'll want something that is durable and practical to the purpose of your book. I'm using Strathmore 18 in. x 24 in. 80 lb drawing paper. Strathmore website
• Paper (endpaper) : I'm using scrapbook paper, a thicker paper with interesting designs. Endpaper on Wikipedia
• Glue stick : Anything will do. I prefer using ones that are purple and dry clear. Elmer's Disappearing Purple School Glue Sticks
• Spray adhesive : Again, as long as it works anything will do. I had some Duro All-Purpose Spray Adhesive around when I was making this. Be very very very careful when using this! Read the instructions on the can. When I was using the spray adhesive I would prepare the paper inside and the go outside to spray it.
• Thread : When making your book, you'll want to use a thread that is durable and easy to work with. There is a thread specifically for bookbinding, but it can be a bit expensive. An alternative to that would be to use dental floss (I've never used this method before so I can't say how well it'll work). You can also use beeswax coated thread, again, it can be expensive to purchase. I just used a generic thread doubled over to be stronger, this has worked fairly well for me. Embroidery thread works great too! (thanks everyone who mentioned this)
Coats & Clark Ecru Upholstery Thread was recommended, it might be worth a try considering the price.
• Needle
• Ruler
• Scissors (fabric scissors optional but could be useful)
• Pencil
• (optional) Cutting Board / Paper Cutter
• Canvas
• Binder clips
• Fabric : For the cover, something you wouldn't mind looking at! I recommend buying some scrap or discount fabric when you first start and later buy something a bit nicer.
• Ribbon : You can use either a strip of fabric or some ribbon if you choose to add a bookmark. Example of what I would use
• Heavy weight : Some heavy books will do, in my case I have an old projector.
• Awl : Something sharp and pointy. I'm using a tool from Bead Buddy 4 Piece Reamer set. The red and yellow ones work great
• Chipboard : You can also use a thin wood or foam. I wouldn't recommend using anything else as they might not be as durable or easy to work with.
• Anything else you want to decorate your book with.
Book Terms :
Book Block : All the sewn together sheets of paper that make up the pages in the book.
End Paper / End Sheets : The first and last paper of the book. They connect the cover of the book to the book block.
Signature : groups of folded paper. I take 4 folded pieces of paper and group them together. When you sew you are sewing the signatures together.

You may use this tutorial in part or whole to teach others, please don't remove my name or URL. Also, it would be great if you send me links to books you create using this. I want to see what everyone is capable of! ♥

LOL
I usualy don't go check the Daily Deviations but I did today. I keep hoping to find a really big sketchbook (like 1000 pages) but I should probably make my own...cheaper too!
I had so much at once I just donated almost all of them. I'm only using a certain one now and I keep the old Paperchase ones because I don't know who sells that brand here now that Borders is gone...

xD
ikr! i want a nice big one cuz small ones are kinda hard to get details for me
making it seems nice. To feel the pages and create the start to your own work... lawl, weird description but its staying xD
i had quite a few that eventauly i just gave em to lil bro and sis to draw scribble in. I got one main one for home, one to sneakily draw in lessons and one for just doodles
its hard to find brand ones. sometimes if i got a certain book, i get a few of the same cuz i get worried i wont find it again

Same. I'll probably buy the big paper so it won't get so small when I fold in half to thread them together...
I do that same. A while back, Borders was selling sketchbooks that had a very nice black nylon cover and I liked it so much, I went to every Borders in Phoenix and bought them out.... :I

yeah, same here. Just gonna have to find the right kinda of paper and thread gah, the sewing is gonna be hell
omg, i wish we had Borders here. Its hard enough to find stationary. Damn, England need to learn a thing or two from America about stores for art and stuff

I like how I can drive just 15 minutes to a pretty good arts and crafts store. And just 2 1/2 miles to my Target if I just need the basics. I'm going to go get some thread tonight and start making my own sketchbooks!
Borders is long gone...and just found out they got bought out by Barnes and Noble - I knew it! And...no Paperchase journals in their website. I'm sad now :[
LOL xD

you're soooooooooooooooo friggin lucky!
if i want art supplies now (im moved houses in the past few months) i have to go quite far to get em. If im desperate, then i'll go to a bookstore (heard of WHSmith?) and get some there. Would be nice if i went into a shop and there was pens, pencils, paper, paints, canvas', glue, glitter...
damn, i got a feeling i shall procrastinate so much that i wont be able to do it ;w; Plus the special paper is something im just not finding. I really dont want to resort to using printing paper, or card
same happened to my favourite store. I thought they just changed names, but then i found out they got bought age 10. never the same...
sad, but it just means i got to go adventuring to find stuff xD Gah, i will get lost within ten minutes
hallo~

This is a fantastic and thorough tutorial! I've always wanted to make my own books, but unfortunately I don't have the materials, hehe. If I can ever get them though, I'll have to reference this to make one. Great job and thanks so much for sharing!

AHA! Why had I not found this sooner? I recently got a book on bookbinding, and I just mentally couldn't make it click. Well, after reading your tutorial, it makes a lot more sense! Thank you!

What was the book called? I've read a few older ones and they always make the process so complicated D;

I got it from the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery, so I thought I'd be safe.
It's newer too. "How to Make Books: Fold, Cut & Stitch Your Way to a One-of-a-Kind Book." By Esther K. Smith.
It just didn't wanna click and now it all makes sense u-u;;
