Description
Completely painted from scratch in Photoshop. The 4th image for MaiaGame. This image is not available to buy as it's copyrighted by the client.
Took about 2 weeks, on and off. I used the vanishing point tool for perspective guides. Not sure what the story is behind the scene, so even I have to wait and see! I am very glad to have the game art in PCGamer. The toughest part of the image was the characters and pig/rodent - I wish humans and animals were made out of square blocks instead of complicated dynamic shapes!!

...you're not kidding??? How many layers did you use?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to CrimsonxPhantom [2012-11-07 12:10:46 +0000 UTC]
I always use loads of layers - 500+. I merge them as I go of course, but to maintain the sharp edges I need to use the poly lasso tool and keep each plain of an object on a separate layer, so I can lock it and adjust it without effecting other plains, if you get what I mean. Obviously I can't paint on one flattened layer because I would have to constantly mask areas over and over to keep them sharp edged and in perspective. It's very long-winded.

Goodness; and I thought 30 layers was a lot. I can see how it'd look so clean and crisp then! I'm still a toddler in the software, and your works always blow my mind! ^^ It looks like a very long process but they always look well worth it in the end. Do you have any tutorials on how to use Photoshop or how to create certain effects?

Thanks again. No, I haven't got any tutorials yet but I recommend watching a guy called Feng Zhu if you haven't seen him already. He is a master. [link]

Looks awesome, James! Especially love the rodent
I wonder, what is your approach for making correct perspective, without usage of 3d software?

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to nikolayhranov [2012-11-06 21:28:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks shad - I use the vanishing point tool (filter drop down menu) in photoshop. I can use it to create perfect perspective grids, which I use as guides to draw over, or drop shapes into. The only problem is it only creates flat plains, so no help for spheres etc. It's a brilliant alignment tool, but it is very unstable and prone to crashing photoshop.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I had my fair share of problems with the vanishing point tool as well, but it really is useful.
The results that you produce are quite masterful, so I guess you made it work for you
Keep us posted on your new projects, I'm really diggin your futuristic concepts
