Description All painted in photoshop. High speed concept. This image is a personal project, so doesn't belong to anyone else, i.e. a client. The non-exclusive license to this image is £10.
Depicts a futuristic tourist location during the summer. The shuttle runs from the airport to the city centre.
If you think summer looks grim, you should see winter.
Vacations have gone out of fashion - people prefer to go on virtual vacations and have virtual relationships online.

No references used. All created from my imagination. No custom brushes, no photo refs, no paint-overs. Texture was achieved by using a default chalk brush in Photoshop. Lightning was drawn with a default hard brush and stretched.

Looks good although I think you need to use higher contrast as some of the shapes are blending in with the background.

Very nice! How did you go about this concept? Do you do lighting last?

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to LostDecay [2012-04-28 23:56:41 +0000 UTC]

Cheers LD! I went straight into painting - no line drawing as usual. As it took shape I began over detailing like I always do. So this time I stopped myself. Instead of using a tiny brush I forced myself to use a large chalky default brush and see what I could do. Very different approach for me. The more painting I did the more contrast I lost. However, at the end I play with the adjustment layers and paint a whole load of highlights that are always lacking. I am gonna stick to this way of doing things for a while as it is so much quicker than trying to get everything perfect straight off. Also concept artists are expected to create images in hours, not days or weeks!

This deviation is very breath-taking. Outstanding job with the details of the city center. The color choices and blend looks great. The texture of this piece sets the tone.

Cheers Prom - I hear that travel is pretty cheap there at the moment. Also, most of the trams have seats and are completely rust free! Apparently the chances of being hit by lightning are lower than usual too, due to the reduction of hotel swimming pools. Health and safety are the city's priority.

Ranay-L In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2012-04-28 10:46:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha

Wow, that sounds lovely.
So if you do find a hotel with a swimmin pool,
you probably shouldn't use it...
Unless you wanna die a horrible death.
But it's deffinetly a plus that you don't have to bring a folding chair in the tram.

how long did this actually take?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesLedgerConcepts In reply to Shadowgrass [2012-04-28 04:05:50 +0000 UTC]

About 5 to 6 hours as I changed the whole idea around. Realistically this should take less time as concepts like this need to be done in about 4 hours if I am to make a living it it.

Shadowgrass In reply to JamesLedgerConcepts [2012-04-28 04:24:49 +0000 UTC]

right, thanks for the tip. I've been wondering about doing concept work myself, but there're some things I'm still wonder about. how did you start out? with just a mouse, or a pad and such.

Sketching first on paper for sure - most artists swear by this. Clients, especially in-house art directors want to see your ability at hard core pencil and paper, rather than just using photoshop. Practice copying all the things around you, then you will have an understanding of how things look and work. For instance, can you draw a castle? Can you draw a factory? What kind of shapes are involved. Suddenly a pattern emerges. Factories have loads of pipes. Castles have moats and drawbridges. Once you build up this visual knowledge you can start creating your own versions without having to experiment for days on end. Then look at cars and trains. What are the key reasons for their design? If you create your own car, where is the driver going to sit? How many wheels? Where is the engine? How is it powered? You don't have to understand all the workings but the look needs to be convincing enough for the viewer to understand what they are looking at within 3 seconds. Also, as I have learned you need to paint/draw your ideas and creations using abstract techniques - not super detail as I have been doing. Detail takes way too long. A junior concept artist can expect about $100 per concept upwards and this concept needs to be done by 10 hours max. Remember, it is an idea, not a work of art. If someone wants you to draw a futuristic helicopter, don't spend more than a few minutes on the surrounding environment - the client already knows what rocks and sky look like and you don't need to focus on them. Put the detail on the helicopter, but not too much. The client wants to be stimulated by your idea which they can show to the production team. If they want to take the idea further they may ask you to do more work refining the design so that a 3D modeler can actually create it for a game or a film. With environments don't render each and every building, as I have done. Focus on the area of interest and use less and less detail as you get further away across the picture. If you have to draw an army only render the key soldier - the viewer will automatically transfer that detail to all the other soldiers and think you have spent a lifetime rendering an entire army. The art of deception. If you find yourself detailing unimportant areas you will have to increase that detail in the important ones - suddenly the $100 job is going to take you 6 weeks. Believe me, it wont make you a living! Learning this stuff doesn't have to take a lifetime. If you draw 20 factories over the next week (until you are bored of them) I bet you could create your own one at the end of it. Once you can sketch this, move into photoshop and add color etc. Learning color and values is BIG stuff so buy books on art, like fundamental skills. You MUST MUST MUST understand the fundamentals, like perspective, color theory, values, anatomy etc. Draw every day, even when you are tired as sometime you will feel like this even when you eventually have to draw 80 different weapons for George Lucas.

Great advice! I've always loved doing characters rather than scenery. And now that I'm trying to do scenery I realize how terrible I am at it lol
