Description I've been meaning to make this tutorial for a while. I didn't bother explaining shading technique, there are other tutorials on here for that if you look around for them, this is mostly a lesson on using CtrlAltG and Hue/Saturation layers.

Like I said at the end, feel free to ask any questions you have here or in notes or emails or anything at all.

I hope it helped!

it's got its uses, but i notice a difference between my textures and other people's... their textures have such nice crispness
so the fuzzy/fluffy might go for skin and stuff, but cloth and metal needs more crisp in my life ^ _ ^

question: what to do after this, when trying to add color to the shadows and highlights (so they're not the same color as the foundation...like blueish shadows, pinkish highlights?)

You can go into the HueSaturation layers and play with the color slider until it's something you like. If you want something more precise and particular, then you can always color on top of the shading you've laid down or create a new hue/sat layer for that. The beauty of photoshop is you can never have too many layers (assuming you haven't crashed the thing yet)

hmm indeed ^ _ ^ i'll give that a go- my coloring always looks fuzzy because i use the smudge tool too much to blend the colors. i'll give your technique a try

Hmmm. That's a very interesting way to do it. I'll have to see how this works on Transformers drawings. It'll save me from having to mess around with various colors to shade manually. Thanks!

Does that help? And you see why I wanted the characters on specific layers?
