Description This certainly shows what one can do with Illustrator, and it was quite an enjoyable time killer.

So then, incase the snapshot and "redone" picture above doesn't tell you anything, this picture is actually in tribute to a forgotten Nintendo Gem called "Wario's Woods".

Now some of you may ask me

"Wario's Woods? But James, I don't see Wario anywhere! All I see is that fungus Toad! "

Your eyes are holding very true. Despite the name, Wario is not the main star. The true star of the game is none other than Mario's close friend, Toad, and Wario was the Antagonist Toad had to face. Some will find it very ironic since Wario has only shown much of his hatred towards his friendlier double, Mario. Still, I'm happy to see my favorite fungus get the spotlight for a change.

To those who are not aware, Wario's Woods is a puzzle-type game, and for it's time it was actually a somewhat original piece for the NES & Super NES. As Toad, you are tasked with destroying all of Wario's wicked Monsters who have infested the playfield. Your only means of destroying them are bombs, which are commonly spawned by the little fairy on the top of the playfield (some sources claim that the fairy is the obscure Mario character, Wanda, though I'm not too sure if this is true). In true Puzzler fashion, you had to line up enemies or bombs with the correct color in more than thirds in order for the bomb to detonate. Also, if you destroy more than 4 enemies, a colored gem would appear, and if you line that up with up to 2 monsters or bombs of the same color, all monsters of that same color would be wiped off the screen.

The game also features a weird mechanic in which the character spawning the bombs will change overtime. During the first while, the fairy will spawn the bombs, and you'll also see Birdo (yes, BIRDO), on the top right signifying that the game is working normally.

However, after a certain amount of time passes, Birdo will be replaced by Wario, and the fairy is replaced by a black bird resembling a Pidget from SMB2. While Wario and Pidget are on the playfield, things start to get tricky, as not only will they spawn bombs, but they also spawn more enemies for you to deal with.

Thankfully, just like Birdo, Wario's time on the playfield is temporary, and after awhile, Birdo will take his place and the game will resume normally. You can also keep Birdo longer, or kick Wario out quicker, if you pull off incredible combos in destroying enemies.

The NES version of the game comes with Game A & Game B modes. Game A is a normal romp through multiple levels, while Game B also features bosses for Toad to defeat every 10 levels. It amazes me what kinds of bizarre bosses Toad is pitted against, one of which is actually a beautiful mermaid. LOL, I can't get that image out of my head. xDDDD

The SNES version is somewhat different. The Game B mode is gone, and Game A is just called "Round Game". To make up for this though, the SNES version has a "V.S. COM" Mode, where you are pitted against multiple opponents in a game of "Wario's Woods".

Both versions do have some things in common though. Both versions come with a 2-Player V.S. Mode, where 1 Player plays as Toad, and the other player plays as a Green Toad (probably to play on the colors of Mario & Luigi xD). The two also have a Time Attack Mode, where you go for the fastest time possible in a level.

The first time I heard of Wario's Woods, I saw a piece of fanart on Nintendo Power ages ago, and at first I thought it was just some idea a kid made up. After I got Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, I was stunned to realize that the game was indeed real, and when I tried it, I was so happy that the game existed.

Wario's Woods is definitely one of my favorite puzzles of all time, not just for the characters, but for the interesting gameplay it has. Certainly something of Nintendo's genius, though it's a shame that it was outside of the radar (especially since the NES version was released when the console was pretty much dead). Thankfully the NES version can be found on the Wii Shopping Channel, and if you can find the SNES version, you won't be disappointed if you're a puzzle fanatic, or prefer Mushroom-Men over Evil Plumbers. xP

. . . . please Nintendo, BRING THIS GAME BACK INTO MODERN DAY GLORY!!! It deserves just as much publicity as the Dr. Mario games did. Do an HD Remake, do a DSi/3DS Port, I don't care! I want this lovable game continued somehow plz!! >A<

Anyhow, that is all.

This was the first game to demonstrate Toad's true power; namely, his insane strength.

Ah, memories- this game was fun to compete against my lil bro. Must been two years now when I played it. I prefer the SNES version.

Really well done reboot art over here- Just remembered that someone in Pixiv made a pic which had Toadette and Waluigi in places of Toad and Wario.

Wario's Woods I love that game. I have the SNES version. I've cleared the Vs. Com easily, but for some reason I have trouble clearing lv 87... sooo many monsters to blast diagonally, so little bombs and time. @_@

Odd thing is, 86 has the Dianogal ones, 87 is the standard ones.

A great game, that. Played it for hours on end on Animal Crossing.

When I remember how Toad could heft an entire stack of Mooks in this, and even further back to SMB2 where he was the strongest/fastest physically, it makes me wonder jokingly why they never bothered to make Toad a Power type character, in any of the multiplayer games that called for classifications like that.

to be quite honest I'm not sure myself. xD

I guess people would take it seriously if Toad was purely Speedy. And if you think about it, if he was both speedy & strong in those games, he'd be one of those "cheap" characters like Juggernaut or Cable in MvC2. xP

One of my fav games on the NES, I fully completed back in primary school XD. I want them to remake the NES/SNES version in any form, that would be awesome. I got it day 1 it came out on the Wii Virtual Console

Did you know that the PAL version had different music o the NTSC version

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesTheReggie In reply to MackySan [2011-03-07 16:03:43 +0000 UTC]

I did not know that actually.

does that apply for just one version or both version in the Pal release?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MackySan In reply to JamesTheReggie [2011-03-08 16:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Im pretty sure the PAL Wii virtual console version has the original PAL music. I'd have to check...

The music for the PAL version was redone as the main music for the SNES release, I cant find any youtube vids, Ill record it myself and show ya

it was also released on the original NES.

As of now it's downloadable for 500 points on the Wii Shop Channel, so if you have that kind of dough, I'd recommend giving it a go.

then your only other option is to get a copy of Animal Crossing on Gamecube, play the game for awhile, look up some cheats, and you're well on your way.

It is believed that Tatanga also makes a reappearance in this game under a different name, but nobody is exactly sure if it is indeed him or another space alien of the same species like him.

If it is, Wario has quite a hold on his services.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesTheReggie In reply to AtomicDexter [2011-03-07 16:05:34 +0000 UTC]

I do recall that a character who looks like him appears in the SNES version as one of the opponents Toad had to face. Though he looked more like a magician this time around.

Whether it's the same species of Tatanga or not is in question at this point.
