Description

DOOM script (2019) Genre: Scifi, Action, Horror. Total Runtime 2h 05min (Rated R for strong violence and gore, strong language, body horror, adult themes)

PREMISE: It's the year 2149. Humankind has made huge leaps towards the stars and built colonies on MARS and on its moons. UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation) is a multi-planetary conglomerate and military contractor, performing secret experiments on INTERDIMENSIONAL SPACE TRAVEL. Recently, the teleportation has shown signs of anomalies and instability, but research continues nonetheless. But in one fateful day, Earth receives distress call from Mars, incoherent message about something EVIL coming through the interdimensional gateway, which Earth responds by sending a warship and platoon of toughest SPACE MARINES. One being the legendary and tough as nails DOOMGUY. But none are aware that the mission is DOOMED from the start.

MAKING OF: I have to admit that I'm little bit underwhelmed by Hollywood's adaptations of the Doom games. I mean, how hard is to make a decent movie about such a simple premise: Doomguy faces hell on Mars. That's it, that's all you need to get right. In Doom (2005) we don't have hell, we sort of have Doomguy-ish, in Doom: Annihilation (2019) we have hell, but NO Doomguy. In both cases, both movies fall half short. So I had enough. I'll give you Doomguy and hell on Mars. We cut the bullshit, we don't dance around it, we don't tease it, I'll give you Doom with the two essential ingredients. It's a mix of Doom 3 and Doom (2016), but more of the recent Doom.

Actually, in first ten minutes you'll get Doomguy and Hell on Mars. Yeah, no pussyfooting around. It's a move to assure you that yes, this is Doom and here are all the elements you expected to see, so no worrying from here on, I've got you. And then we start the PLOT. It's Doom meets Aliens meets Total Recall meets Robocop meets Evil Dead meets Chernobyl (HBO series), and little bit of Mortal Kombat. So mashup of all the best ingredients. First I wanted to make a war movie, space marines fighting demons, like Saving Private Ryan but with demons. That's why the tag line ”War is Hell”, because that's deep, Mars was named after the Roman God of War and the actual Hell is on the planet, that's why ”War” is ”Hell”, very multi layered and thought provoking tag line xD.

And yeah, the beginning is still with that idea, but then I was like, if there's dozen or more space marines addition to Doomguy, that looked the same, acted the same, only sounded different, I felt it stole thunder and spotlight from Doomguy, our main hero. It's not like we're doing Halo here. So I went back to the drawing board and thought up this one man's figurative and literal journey to hell, and on the way Doomguy gains back his humanity and identity. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. And in the backdrop we're dealing with galactic scale conspiracy that threatens all mankind. All comes back in the title ”Doom”, everything and everybody are doomed from the start, Doomguy is doomed, Mars is doomed, Earth is doomed, humankind is doomed, even the demons are doomed, and the crux of the story is how we deal with these insurmountable odds, how we play with the cards we are dealt and you can't change them. I think it's more compelling story than a generic demon shoot 'em up.

And no, there's no BFG. Actually, Sarge tells you that in a fourth wall breaking moment in the first ten minutes of the story. Let me explain. In the previous two Doom movies the BFG (Big Fucking Gun) is underwhelming and incorrect. It always took precious screen time and payoff was always little or nothing at all. I didn't find a place for it here and I wasn't going to force it. And introducing something powerful like that would lessen the tension. If I used it somewhere, I would use it in the sequel, when stakes are bigger. Where you could properly hype it up and give it justice.

I finished the story and I have a lot of thoughts about the nature of heroism

ive seen a lot of action movies where the “hero” was a repellent scumbag , especially after September 11. But doom guy here is the hero I need

guys like Frank Miller love the 300 Spartans, usually as a form of posturing egotistical self annihilation

but the truth is that living is harder. And doom guy lived more in an hour than most men do their whole lives. In this story he made probably his first real friend (I dig the glowing cum joke) and he found a cause of his own free will and choice he believed in

Gilgamesh fought for power and immortality. But Doom guy was ready to die for all the bunnies on earth. And his return to life was the true victory: defying death. Like guts from berserk, his staying alive against the odds is the greatest act of defiance

In short, you made basically my perfect hero

Yay! I crafted the perfect hero. Yeah, that's the gist of it. Doomguy
gains back his humanity by dying, that's why the line "Only human after all".
And like the phoenix rising from the ashes, he comes back and kicks demon
ass big time. Fighting for all the bunnies back on Earth xD

Glowing cum joke finally broke the ice between Doomguy and Jekaterina.

Most movies have that "Ticking Time Bomb" trope, bringing urgency and
suspension in a story. But I made it that Doomguy is that Ticking Time Bomb
from beginning to the end. You can watch him go off xD

Thanks for reading it, Boot

Even though I dissed the doom movie, I still grinned when doom guy said the semper fai thing.  It was a strike of brilliance

and I just read the death of the cyber demon. That was a perfect way to use the game mechanic of exploding barrels in a movie sense as well as a plot feature

the death of daisy felt shockingly realistic. Bunny dies of fear. Makes sense. And that realism helps me buy the more fantastic elements

lastly I love how you subverted they Prometheus myth. That’s so brilliant, it’s impossible to overstate what fire has done for our species. Like the demons are attacking our most basic Darwinian weakness.

He's a marine, so Semper Fi and FUBAR would be in his vocabulary.

Yeah, you have to do something with those barrels. And Doomguy
gets even more creative with those barrels. I always wondered
what those exploding barrels were in the games, this explains
them in detail and makes them make perfect sense in that type
of world.

Daisy's death was based on real world fact, rabbits can actually
die from fright. Loud sounds or screaming can lead to a heart
attack and putting rabbit into a shock, causing sudden death.
Even Daisy was doomed from the start. Something so fragile
couldn't survive in this new hellish world.

No fire, no civilization. No Argent, no civilization. Demons are so
intertwined with humankind, so destroying them isn't that easy,
without causing a terrible toll on human civilization, even plunging
them back to the dark ages. I think Prometheus myth was the
best way to explain how fucked Doomguy and Jekaterina are by
comparing Argent to Fire.

Upon closer look you drew Olivia Pierce like an evil version of Caroline from Wolfenstein.  Don’t know if that’s deliberate but I like it

Also I looked at some of your older writings for context and I think you’ve gotten better. The action beats are pretty perfect , the jokes hit the right notes. “The doom slayer! We’re doomed!” The fuck your pie moment . You’ve vastly improved as a writer
I don’t actually know how to criticize this because it has everything I want. And that moment when doom guy admits he didn’t enlist, that hit me hard. Like it was a powerful moment and really changed how I looked at him. I was in the army and hated it, so this felt close to my heart

Jarol-Tilap In reply to Master-of-the-Boot [2019-11-11 17:25:15 +0000 UTC]

Drawing inspiration from Caroline wasn't the intention, just a happy
coincident. I just wanted to make Olivia as evil as fuck, she is after all
possessed by Abaddon. I thought that evil corporate overlords would
be too tropy, so I spiced it up with demons running the company,
demons acting like evil corporate overlords xD What a twist!

Yeah, in the classic Doom, Doomguy was punished on Mars after
assaulting his senior officer. I was like, wouldn't it make more sense
here that he wasn't punished on Mars, but he was punished to join
the marines, making him the fine killing machine he's today.
Another thing he had no control over. Making his struggle more
relatable, like it was for you.

Sometimes you just have to put a pie gag in there somewhere xD
But joking aside, I'm pleased to hear I've gotten better, but how
much better can you get, when do I know I've peaked, maxed
out. But you can say that about everything, there's always
room for improvements, no one's perfect in their craft.

I’m reading the part with Jekartarina and I really love how you included doom 3. I love that game and it has damn good story and world building. Mars city feels like a real city where real people live. And Doom guy by you is so likeable. More than I can say for anyone from call of duty or the doom movies

and daisy the rabbit is so wonderful, especially in the robocop style pov shots

really I can’t sing your praise enough. I love this

Thanks, Boot!

I'm glad it's hitting the right spots. Some don't like Doom 3, but there are
some good story elements and characters that need their time to shine,
least in a movie form. Phew, I'm pleased to hear that Doomguy works
and as the story goes on he becomes more badass and gains more
personality, standing out from the rest of the faceless marines.

Yeah, that's another problem with those Doom movies, underwhelming
characters. You only remember the eastern egg characters that show
up for a few seconds, like Carmack and Blazkowicz, how bad is that?! xD

Yeah, Daisy is wonderful, but don't get too attached to her.

I’m at about page 18 and what gets me is how many surprises this has. I adore the framing device of a UAC propaganda video to start it off. It’s like those commercials on robocop.

And second Doomguy and his team really surprised me. They evoke both badass space marines and how people play FPS games on cooperative.

The early arrival of the cyber demon was very welcome. More than any zombie or bullshit, it shows he’ll is not to be messed with

Yeah, when in doubt, use Robocop commercials to open a movie. xD

That's right! I wanted the marines to be blunt instruments, they
talk little and use violence to solve ALL their problems. And it
gets funny when the violence actually works, it's funny and cool
at the same time. They don't have time to bleed xD

Yeah, it's full of twists and turns, you will have no idea how it
will end, how the hell is Doomguy going to triumph when
absolutely everything is against him. He is completely DOOMED.

Oh, there's gonna be a brutal rematch with the Cyberdemon.

That's uh...that's a good idea actually. Saving the BFG for the second film. I have to agree with how it was handled in the 2005 film. Not only was it underused, but they also changed the fucking name. I'm guessing the filmmakers changed the name from "Big Fucking Gun" to "Bio Force Gun" because they might have thought the former name wasn't serious enough, which isn't what Doom is supposed to be. Doom, in essence,  is a fun, over-the-top, gory, blood-soaked shoot 'em up. There is absolutely nothing in the game that shows it's supposed to be taken seriously.

I don't know if you've seen Turbo Kid, but I want Doom to be something
like that but with bigger budget, over-the-top gory, so gory that it
becomes absurd and funny, it's like violent art. And I agree with you,
Doom shouldn't be completely serious, it needs to be self-aware. It
needs to be FUN. Doomguy needs to be over-the-top, demons need
to be over-the-top, kills need to be over-the-top, or it won't work.

I haven't seen Turbo Kid yet, but I have listened to bits of the soundtrack, which sounded pretty good.

I'm really getting into the whole synthwave movement, and Turbo Kid's soundtrack definitely has that synthwave feel.

Alright! Then you should watch it, it's like a parody of 80's post-apocalyptic movies
that were all the rage back then, like Mad Max, but instead driving cars, they drive
bicycles xD If you can get over that you'll have a blast. And Michael Ironside is
the main bad guy! And holy shit it's brutal, filled with gory slapstick
