Description
For a number of years I've guested at Auto Assembly (Europe's largest Transformers convention) with a host of comicbook artists, writers and voice actors who have worked on TF over the past 25 years. This year, Gregg Berger, the voice of Grimlock in the G1 Transformers cartoon, attended the show and I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a Grimlock piece since I've never drawn him!I thought I'd have a shot at re-designing him to fit with the movie characters, and this is how I'd like him to look. I wanted to get a design of his robot mode done for the con but ran out of time, maybe I'll do it in the future if I get a slot in the schedule!
A big thank you to the fans who liked this piece! I took a load of prints of it to the show and sold every single one of them! Cheers, guys!

but seriously, incredible job! each time i look i'm amazed all over again. 
actually, please feel free to design all the transformers characters for the movie-verse. 
what does it matter if a giant t-rex wouldn't be very conspicuous in TF3? none of the characters are exactly subtle. xP
i want grimlock. he would be so so so awesome to see in the movie-verse.

I always envisioned Grimlock as having an altmode that looked like a junkyard sculpture

Since the beginning, Grimlock was always a potential bad ass. While he always came down on the right side, he was always aware of just how much power he actually had. I had a feeling that he didn't really care as much about being a leader as he did in proving that he was the most powerful being that walked, capable of taking on both Prime and Megatron which in truth, he could. This may be part of the reason perhaps that Prime had any misgivings about him in the first place, because the potential of him being an unstoppable volcano was always there. In the G1 series, the only reason he deferred to Prime at all, was because Prime risked his own life to save him, something he had never considered before. His respect for Spike and Carly came when the two risked everything to save the Dinobots from imprisonment on Cybertron, so he recognizes loyalty both to and of friends and comrades. Other than Sunstreaker, Grimlock is still however,the most Decepticon of all the Autobots in any other way and would go off on his own in a spark pulse if he thought it would do any good. And while his metal munching is often underplayed, he is a representation of a voracious Earth carnivore with the attitude to match and it would not be far fetched for him to find pleasure both in striking fear on the battlefield and in eating or ripping apart any hapless creature with the bad luck of finding him as an opponent.
It was for this reason more than any other that I loved Grimlock, and often wanted to see a edgier far more dangerous version of him. He was cute in the G1 version, and only his bipedal robot form gave some hint of what he could truly be. The TFA series gave him more of an edge that only Magnus could control, something that I found refreshing to see, but there was still something missing and this is it. I would love to see this look in the movies. This is the body that should share Grimlock's attitude. This is the Dinosaur he should truly be. Thank You. This is truly an awesome work of art. I love it!

I'm really glad you liked the artwork! Yeah, G1 cartoon Grimlock was slightly too slow and dumb for me, I don't know if you ever read the early english Simon Furman comics but Grimlock was very intelligent and constantly undermined Prime (I suppose he was the Autobot equivalent of Starcream) not because he could be a better leader but because he was more powerful. I would like to see this type of Grimlock character in a TF movie, being a 'good guy' in that he's not a peace-loving Autobot but a Transformer that loved trashing Decepticons!!

It's probably because my G1 Grimlock dino had red eyes when I was a kid and that's what stuck in my head. Plus red looks better on a T-Rex!
