Description
For a number of years I've guested at Auto Assembly (Europe's largest Transformers convention) with a host of comicbook artists, writers and voice actors who have worked on TF over the past 25 years. This year, Gregg Berger, the voice of Grimlock in the G1 Transformers cartoon, attended the show and I thought it would be a good opportunity to do a Grimlock piece since I've never drawn him!I thought I'd have a shot at re-designing him to fit with the movie characters, and this is how I'd like him to look. I wanted to get a design of his robot mode done for the con but ran out of time, maybe I'll do it in the future if I get a slot in the schedule!
A big thank you to the fans who liked this piece! I took a load of prints of it to the show and sold every single one of them! Cheers, guys!
Here's to Grimlock in TF3!!! (and hope he looks like a T-Rex!)

YES! That would totally rock. I'm not sure if I want the dinobots to be more like this, or more alien like Ravage was.. cuz it'd be pretty gnarly to see horrendous draconic stylized alien reptiles, but nothing can beat an awesome metallic tyrannosaur like this...

Thanks!
It's kinda based on the TF Movie Ravage design which, so far, is the only movie TF we've seen that resembles an animal. I figure the Dinobots wouldn't be a massively dissimilar to Ravage, since a lot of the robot designs look similar to each other.

That is absolutly epic. The best movieverse Grimlock ever. I like the nostalgic fire-breath and the tail-harpoon is a nice touch (I bet that was referenced from movie Ravage). My only complaint, though, are that the teeth look too small. A real T. rex had teeth that were like railroad spikes. Other than that, this is totally awesome. I can't even begin to imagine what the robot mode looks like, or even the other dinobots.
Speaking of which, I had this idea for why the dinobots were dinosaurs, if they get into the next movie. A backstory, if you will. OK, here it goes.
They were a team of space exploration scientists from the future. (I know they're supposed to be dumb as nails, but bare with me) Their main objective was to study prehistoric life on distant planets. To acheive this, they use a "transwarp drive" to travel through time. (Small nod to Beast Wars) To better understand the native fauna, they take on the form local wildlife that best fit their robot bodies and use a "holographic skin" to fit in better. The last stop in their expidition was prehistoric Earth. They land in what is now South Dakota and begin studying and (carefully) interacting with the environment. But then they hit a snag. They happen to arrive on Earth at about 65.5 million years ago during the Cretaceous; the End of the Age of Dinosaurs; when the asteroid arrives. The blast from the asteroid buries the dinobots under tons of debrie and remain in "stasis lock" till about July 1, 2011. Haven't figured out how they get released yet. It bugs the hell out of me.
Anyway, because they came to Earth at that specific time and place, I figured some of the dinobots would need somewhat different dinosaurs to look like.
Grimlock and Slag stay as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, respectivly.
Sludge would still be a long-necked dinosaur but of a different species. Brontosaurus (now correctly called Apatosaurus) doesn't work because it's from the Jurassic. To replace it, I suggest Alamosaurus. Though slightly smaller with different proportions, it has the bonus of having an armored back.
Snarl wouldn't stay as a Stegosaurus because, like the brontosaur, it's from the Jurassic. So he would be changed to an Ankylosaurus. Relativaly squat, it's incredibly well armored (even the eyelids) and armed with a large club on the end of it's tail.
And finally Swoop. A Pteranodon is close but no cigar. It actually went extinct just five million years before the asteroid. Plus the proportions aren't right for a giant robot; while it's long wings give it a wingspan of almost 30 feet, they are incredibly narrow; and the body's not much bigger than that of a Thanksgiving turkey. So to compensate, I give you Quetzalcoatlus. It's much bigger; wingspan is at about 40 feet, and the wings themselves are comparitivly shorter; it's body is almost twice as big as a man's; and it stands at 16 feet high, tall enough to have a stare-down with a giraffe.
If all this doens't fly, then in comes my back-up plan: they land in Orlando, Florida and hide in the Jurassic Park ride at Universal.
Wow, this is my longest comment yet.

Thanks for your mega-post, DOTB18!
I have no idea how they would bring the Dinobots in the 3rd movie (they wouldn't exactly be robots in disguise!), but I wouldn't be surprised if they had another alt mode that would be some kind of Earth transport / equipment. Come to think of it, they may make the 'robot mode' look like dinosaurs freeing them up to transform into something else, just like Devestator wasn't exactly humanoid in shape... time will tell if they even make it in!

Wow man, just wow. This is simply mind blowing. Amazing detail in the drawing and amazing colours too. I wasn't thinking grimlock when I saw it, mainly because he looks damn evil...i thought megatron in t-rex mode like in beastwars.
Still, regardless of my ignorance, this is stunning.

Yeah, he had to look pretty mean in order for people to take him seriously. I can't imagine a robotic t-rex that looks 'good' (as opposed to 'evil'!

Thanks a lot!
I know Simon Furman (writer on most of the TF comics), who was consulted during production for the movies, other than that I don't know anyone connected to Bay.
My mate is friends with Don Murphy on facebook and sent him a message about it but I doubt he would ever bother having a look.
It would be awesome if he did though..!

Ah awesome! I'd like to see how u imagine Grimmy to look in robot mode in this version, i'm always like: How do they fold?? /cocks head x)
I think it's actually possible with mr. Spielberg behind the scenes and mr. Bay being mr. Crash-Boom-Burn to see Dinobots in next movie. Your being all spiky would be how i'd like them to show him.
