Description
A short while ago, the mighty Jon Schindehette set a Tolkien challenge on The ArtOrder [link] inspired by a post on Muddy Colors [link] Both blogs are required reading by amateur and professional illustrators alike. The original challenge to illustrate the scene of Eowyn facing the Witch King can be found here [link] The line-up of 160 submissions can be found here [link] And the judging, here [link]The judges were stars in the industry and the pressure to bring awesomeness to the table was on - it was also a hard lesson in how real life can interfere, as in the week I'd set aside to cram in my entry, I was incredibly ill and my wife was also studying after hours. Nevertheless, I managed to enter at the last minute with a few misgivings about the figure of Eowyn specifically and still received a few wonderful comments which I'm extremely grateful for.
Here is the revised picture, taking into account the judge's critiques (comments came from Matt Stewart, Arnie Fenner, Donato Giancola and Dan Dos Santos). I'm proud of it and a little dizzy at having the names Dulac and Targete mentioned in the comments.

I watched the LotR films, before I read the books.
So, when they mentioned Fell Beast in the book, I envisioned it looking the same like in the film - more or less like a wyvern.
However, the book also said that it's a bird-like creature (rather than dragon-wyvern-like), and frankly, I simply COULDN'T create a non-movie picture in my head, of a Fell Beast that looks like a bird...
...until I saw your picture.
Thank you for that.
Your Fell Beast looks even better than the movie version - I'm sure Tolkien would be proud.
Also, I really like the looks of Theoden's horse, Snowmane.
And, of course, Eowyn and Witch-king look really awesome.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I enjoyed the books before the films, and enjoyed the films, but it has taken a long time to try and forget about the film designs. since they're so prevalent in the media.

''This is probably the best version of Nazgul's Fell Beast that I ever saw.''
My opinion on this picture:
''This is definitely the best version of Nazgul's Fell Beast that I ever saw.''

Everything about this picture works - the details are great, the 'captured moment' is great, and I actually preffer this Fell Beast design over the movie version.

This. Is. EPIC!!! I love how you depicted the Witch King, with his tiny crown, and Eowyn's stance looks perfect.

Wonderful.
And the way you portray the Nazgul is quite original.

wow, the details are amazing!
I really like, that you didn't copy the movie-design and invented something else instead <3

One of my favorites from this challenge's line up. I love the monster's featherless, half bird-half reptile form.

That's a beautiful scene.
The dead horse closer to the camera was a nice touch. Great work.
