It's all about the references. I usually spend about 1-2 days searching for references showing everything from the tiniest detail to the whole object.

so how do you start one? like, i have this one thing that a guy designed, the Titmat Battleship, and it looks amazing, and i wanted to practice by 3ding it, but hell i dont know how to even start, its such a complex object. i got a flatboard of the rails and cannon peice, but thats it for now, i planed to make half of it, then mirror on the y axis and fuse the mesh at the mid points (using the fuse all verticies within 1 cm technique)i currently use Blender btw. although i have maya and 3ds max, i cant get Max to work, and maya is... i donno i find blender easyer then maya prolly cuz i used blender for the past two years on and off. i was told that max is the best choice to use.

Well like i mentioned before it's all about the references. An example that reminds me of yours is my Star destroyer, a pretty complex model with allot of detail. But as any other project I searched for days to find a pictures showing all the axis and details, and the mirror technique you're talking about is often used to save time. When it comes to software it's a matter of choice, like you said, I use Maya because I feel safe with it, and the 3Ds Max thing is all bull though all programs out there are good at different things. And I prefer Maya sense i believe it handles "all things" best.

I don't know how to do it in other programs but in Maya I usually snap the pivot to origo and type -1 in x or whatever axis. Star destroyer over here -> [link]
