Developed alongside the Fort Duquesne-class cutter, the Kit Carson-class augmented the Jamestown's mediocre science capabilities. With three long-range sensor arrays, the Carson-class was well-suited to the role of scout, able to detect ships, planets, and anomalies long before many of her contemporaries could. This made them invaluable for exploring the frontier, as well as limited patrol duty. A few were also assigned to intelligence-gathering operations on the Klingon border. The rarest of the three types, only 27 were built, with 4 lost.
