The Jamestown's most notable feature is the large, multipurpose pod slung under a compact hull. Known as the Colony Support Module (CSM), this pod houses additional living quarters, machine shops, an infirmary, vehicle bay, cargo bay, communications suite, and armory. Other, more specialized modules may also be used. These include habitat modules for harsh environmenst, factory modules for more advanced construction, and hospital modules to provide more advanced medical care. Unfortunately, the Jamestown class is underpowered and undergunned when compared to her contemporaries, the Daedalus and Bonaventure-classes. Though highly adaptable, they do not excel in any one area, making them weak as dedicated warships or scouts. However, for temporary assignments on the borders of uncharted space, they are exceptionally well equipped. While these vessels are found primarily on the frontier, some have been re-purposed into cargo haulers, long-range scouts, and even hospital ships.
Design History
--------------
The latter half of the 22nd century was a time of adventure, daring, glory, and wonder. The Bonaventure and Daedalus-classes were discovering new worlds almost every day, and the newly formed United Federation of Planets sought to claim those worlds. In order to this, colonies had to be established. Across the Federation, hundreds of thousands of brave souls would rise to the challenge, lured by the promise of adventure. But to get to these unclaimed jewels required ships, thousands of them. So the call went out to every shipyard across the Federation. Within months, the first of these new vessels began sailing out of the yards. Thus began what is perhaps the greatest era of colonization in Federation history.
Not all of these endeavors were successful. Between 2169 and 2173, seven colonization efforts had failed, either due to the colony being attacked, or the colony ship never arriving. In an effort to solve this problem, Starfleet began assigning escorts to colony ships heading into unexplored territory. This however, was proving problematic, as Starfleet had neither the resources nor the ships to protect every new colony. In 2177, the Advanced Starship Design Bureau, formed only three years earlier, was tasked with solving this problem. The Bureau's mission was simple: design a small, warp-capable vessel that could assist in all stages of colonization. This new ship would need to be capable of engaging threats, as well as exploration, cargo hauling, providing medical aid, and transporting personnel. These ideas would lay the groundwork for Jamestown-class Colony Support Ship (CSS).
Launched just three years after the project began, the USS Jamestown and her sister-ship USS San Diego immediately went to work escorting colonists to their future homes. Under the command of Captain Theodore Ruhalter, the Jamestown shepherded the colony ships Pioneer and Ulysses to a newly discovered world on the edge of Federation territory. Within weeks of arriving, the colony was attacked by Orion pirates. The Jamestown managed to drive them off, sustaining only minor damage.
San Diego fared much worse. Two weeks into the 5 week voyage, one colony ship lost warp drive and was forced to limp back to Vulcan. She was never heard from again. Upon arriving at their destination, the San Diego and the remaining colony ship, S.S. Archimedes, were immediately attacked by three Klingon raptors. Archimedes quickly fled at full impulse (towing the San Diego's discarded CSM) leaving San Diego to deal with the three Klingon ships. One raptor broke off to pursue the fleeing ship, while the other two engaged San Diego. Details remain sketchy, but according to the ship's log, the Archimedes was damaged by the Klingons, and forced to land. Helpless on the ground, the colonists could only wait, and pray that their attackers would not follow. Meanwhile, San Diego, having destroyed one raptor and disabled another, quickly set off after the Archimedes. Despite heavy damage, Captain David Roberts ordered the attack. Though the raptor was driven off, the San Diego was believed lost with all hands. To honor their protector's brave sacrifice, the settlers named their new colony New San Diego.
Six months later, Captain Andrea Harris of the USS Kingston, another Jamestown-class vessel, discovered the San Diego drifting several hundred light years from New San Diego. Despite extensive damage to her hull and superstructure, she was still operational, though she'd lost communications, warp drive, and impulse power. With life support failing, her surviving crew was quickly rescued and the wreck taken into tow. Captain Harris soon learned that Roberts had gone to warp after destroying the final raptor. Unfortunately, the damage they suffered caused the warp drive to fail. After limping for several months on reduced impulse power, the engines finally gave out, stranding her. One year after the battle, Captain Roberts and the San Diego returned to the colony they helped defend. The Jamestown-class had proven its worth, and Starfleet immediately ordered additional units. By the time the last ship rolled off the line in 2220, 142 Jamestowns had been built, with a loss of only 28. USS San Diego was finally retired in 2243, and now resides in the New San Diego Colonization Museum
