While the Jamestown-class were exceptional vessels overall, their performance in individual fields was mediocre. Thus, the Advanced Starship Design Bureau began development of a ship to address these inadequacies. The Fort Duquesne-class cutter was designed to address the Jamestown's tactical deficiencies. They were well suited to planetary defense work, but could also act as perimeter action ships, and could be found patrolling the Federation's newly-settled frontier. Sadly, only 76 were ever completed, with 32 lost.
