Description
I don't know how the heck I missed posting this earlier, but better late than never. I drew this a few years ago for who requested I show Archie's Betty as a fairy godmother turning Veronica into something. A pumpkin seemed natural, given the fairy tale reference.Interesting bit of trivia: One of my earlier Archie pieces that I posted on DA drew the attention of Archie Comics' art director, who asked me if I'd like to draw for the company. I said yes, but then the correspondence dropped off. Awhile later, this piece was commissioned, and I was inspired to create a pitch for Archie that would put the Riverdale gang in familiar fairy tales, and would be called "Happily Ever Archie". The art director liked it, the editor liked it but was skeptical, and after having me do some unrelated character sketches for their approval, correspondence dropped off again for good. Oh well.

At least she won't smash Cinderonica into pieces.

Though I'm probably too late to send my condolences, don't let it get you. This dialogue makes me chuckle and the art is phenomenal. I think they actually went along with the idea of using the Riverdale characters in fairy-tale-themed stories, but the art doesn't even compare. To make a long comment short, I thinkΒ you did a great job.

Glass bowling shoes. Okay.
Good picture. Your stuff is more than good enough for Archie Comics.

That would've made a cool series (oh, well- some great ideas never get off the ground and beyond)
BTW, there's a follow-up image in my head of Pumpkin-Cinderonica rolling out into the shed and somehow making a crude sticks-and-clothes body for herself, a la Jack Pumpkinhead

I would have loved to have seen your style in something like their Little Archie line. This is really cute.

I like to look at it this way....Jay drawing Archie? Ok, kinda cool. Jay sharing Dead Duck, Bodie Troll, and awesome fan art? Groovy.

Their loss, Jay! This kind of crossover would rank right up there with Archie meeting the Punisher.
Glass bowling shoes? Hope she doesn't drop the ball on her foot, because as ugly as those shoes are, at least they won't shatter into pieces that stick into your flesh, make you bleed, and stop the date right then and there. Interesting casting Veronica as Cinderella, when she'd be more like the bad step-sisters. This will not look good on Betty's review in front of the Godmother certifying board. Nice work.
Not that you asked, but I'm a bit more partial to Veronica over Betty.

That is incomprehensible, given the poor off-model quality work of recent artists they HAVE hired. They'll print those nasty-looking "Realistic Archie" cartoons but not yours. Their loss then.

You know good sir, They should have picked you up as an artist, I like the Dan Parent stuff alot I even own an original Dan Parent but your take on Archie characters are by all my favorite this one was one of my alltime favorite commissions I had you do, your fairy tale flair and style seemed like a good blend for the Archie crew I'd by the hell outta a Jay Fosgitt Archie story. The Archie thing didn't pan out but there's nothing but good things in your career good sir there's always a place for folks who really enjoy what they do.

Love the look on the pumpkin Veronica's 'face' and Betty looks too cute. Too bad Archie Comics wouldn't pull the trigger on your idea, I think it would have been a total hit.

It was probably a blessing in disguise. Right after that, there was a ton of in-fighting and litigation amongst the management at Archie, and I'd have hated to be caught up in all that. Plus, in that time I developed my new comic, "Bodie Troll", which will be far cooler than anything I could have done for Archie!

Ah yes, I remember hearing about that internal fighting happening there. I wonder if they ever sorted everything out. Either way, you are correct; you were able to create and stylize your own characters and have them be the success they are today ^_^

As much as I love the Archie characters and as much as I always love your take on um, I'm probably happier to see you doing your own thing with "Bodie Troll" one I will get to see something new and original and 2 it will be a return of the "Cholly" characters I loved from a few years back all and all I think its a win for folks who follow your work and you seem to be enjoying what you do now so I'm glad your where you want to be its going to be epically awesome.

I appreciate it, Dennis. I much prefer doing my own stuff to doing licensed characters, no question about it. There are only a couple licensed properties I'd like to work on, and just to say that I did it. I'm working on one of them right now, which is cool, too.

I used to draw an undead bunny that turned folks into easter eggs a few years back, thats the closest to an orignal character I've ever come up with I'm not so good on the creation part of the thinking process yet, when I sit down and try to think of what I want to do I say to my self "I'm gonna draw something new and its gonna be a national icon!" Then my brain takes me for a trip and I wind up drawing Veronica with a rutabaga head, being a basket case is fun sometimes.
