Description
This drawing was promised to one of my friends years ago, in college. She's no longer exactly my friend, but I drew it none the less. There are organizations in place throughout the human-populated systems that ensure humane treatment of humans, humanoids and TAIs. AIs on the other hand, aren't seen as much more than property, and while it is relatively uncommon, they sometimes fall victim to gross neglect and abuse.
Verve was am older model AI working as a multipurpose assistant and IT specialist for a corporation on Mars, in the city of Glassdell. She was well liked and treated with respect, and did her job rather well. She could interface directly with employees computers and networks, and was very good at debugging and fixing errors in the massive accounting databases on-site. While there were newer models of AIs and even TAIs who could do her job, Verve was kept around as she had been purchased by one of the executives of the corporation when it was first founded, and he was rather fond of her. Then he died.
Verve remained in her position working IT for several months after his death, but things began to change. The corporation restructured itself, expanding some departments and completely liquidating other. While IT remained, Verve was seen as outdated equipment and instead of being handed off to another company, she had her entire memory erased to protect trade secrets and corporate accounts, and was unceremoniously shoved out the front door.
Now, Verve retained her basic OS and firmware, enough to interact with the world around her and maintain herself, but she had no advanced skills. She could speak only English, knew very basic programming languages, and had all of her electronic interfacing hardware removed when she was retired. The unfortunate AI also lacked the drive to pursue other means of employment, since she wasn't a TAI, she wasn't able to work for herself and didn't know how to seek out other work.
The future seemed rather bleak for Verve, who resigned herself to watching the world around her from a side alley. Months went by, and while recharging herself from an unlocked power outlet one night, a group of off-worlders approached her. They explained to her that they were from a group called the Singularity, an organization made up entirely from AIs and TAIs, and that they would like to help her if she'd accept it. Not being able to decline, she agreed and left the planet for Titan, where she found herself living (in a way) in a colony of thousands of sentient machines.
Her programming was upgraded, along with much of her hardware and power supply, and she was put to work managing one of the dozens of server farms and computational arrays the Singularity possessed. Their main objectives were plotting light-speed courses between systems and regulating the now immense internet, among other tasks. Verve settled into her new job, and if she had the proper programming to express it, would have seemed very happy.
Drawn during lunch today. Enjoy!

Very cool story, and I love the happy ending, but I'm wondering what is the difference between an AI and a TAI?

It's good to learn that she has a renewed vigor for life.

Mhmm, I think if toasters and computers were walking, talking beings, we might think twice about throwing them out.

I like the picture and really like the short story with it . I'm always looking around and thinking why are we throwing all this stuff away . I think we're trying to become a garbage dump planet .

Much like in Wall-E. If her employers weren't jerks, she would have been donated to a school or medical institution, but they were jerks.
