Description ********Edit*****
Unless I find an odd spelling issue, Now I'm done. I added some more background color, the dragon I forgot about, more information, and switched up some numbers.

Also translated this into russian [link] . Looks awesome.
********Edit*****

Thank you for the feedback.

All dragons hand drawn, no sketching.

All dragons appeared in the show at one point. The Green and Orange Dragons fly by in Dragon Quest and I used artistic judgement as to how they looked sitting based on their flying body structures.

Some of the teen dragons were really difficult to draw because I couldn't figure out how to break down the art structure.

Random observations:

-Damn, are Equestrian dragons a gawky bunch from hatching to subadulthood (and beyond in several cases). I'm especially dumbstruck by that unfortunate fellow with the mountainous thorny hindquarters: fat storage for a pending growth spurt, perhaps?

-Hey, albinism (that pink-eyed white one)...I've noted that phenomenon in snakes & crocodilians. Not many fantasy franchises bother referencing it, much less with dragons.

- Now I wonder what function, if any, is served by that tail-tip 'arrowhead'...stimulation of thick-skinned partners, much like the barb in a male lion's tail-tuft? Stabbing weapon in a pinch?

-Heh, Hero Mode. Interesting that Spike's raised by/crushing on quadrupeds, yet visualizes himself as Dudley Do-Right humanoid. Hopefully if he manages a form like that, the "real world" proportions are a bit more reasonable...those legs & that upper body just don't mesh.

-Given the cranial/facial hair sported by several of these guys, it seems evident that dragons, much like our long-extinct therapsids & pelycosaurs, are at least somewhat mammalian-which would seem to make crossbreeding slightly less insane a prospect (at least, less wacky than whatever process gives you griffons, cockatrices, Discord, etc.)

-Interesting theory re: the Night Guard; one source elsewhere posited that they're ordinary pegasi cloaked by personal glamours c/o Luna. All things being equal, I prefer your spin on the matter.

-Prodigiously random thought: would pony-gestated hybrids spend any time developing in an avian/reptilian-style egg, or would that be reserved for stallion/fem-drag spawn (if at all)?

Interesting stuff, and nice work covering every stage of Spike's development over the Birthday Incident(TM).

-I'd say he's in that awkward growth spirt between the two stages, or he grew two stages in the bottom half and now needs to even out.

-Dragons seem to be the boss baddies and are few in number. If you had a lot of dragons with different colors you might see them more. Also, most fantasy games have villains as the dark race, creatures of the night, and albino characters would break the mold. (Albino baddies are usually allied with the good if they show up)

- "barb in a male lion's tail-tuft?" I've never heard of that. Any more info?

I haven't been able to find any animal with spaded tails except for dragons and demons. I wonder how that came about anyway. I think the spaded tail was meant to depict an air rudder for flying dragons or sea serpents (much like a eel's tail). So my guess is rudder or blade to wedge under scales

-He might be raised by quadrupeds, but he does tend to walk around on two legs. The only other two legged creatures would be birds, and they have very narrow legs for their body. Them and Iron Will (who also has tiny legs).

-The idea has merit. We might also take into consideration that magic might very well be an element in that reality and it allows for an easier transfer of genetic information from one species to another. Dragons might have access to a larger variety of genetic possibilities. Scales, feathers, and hair have similar genetic starts but have different selecting genes.

-Thank you.

-The best answer I've come up with is that it's based on maternity. Female dragon=Egg born. Mare=Live born.

Sorry for the late response, I've been a bit off kilter for a few days trying to work on a project. Also thank you for referencing therapsids & pelycosaurs, I'm basing a villain off them and couldn't remember their names to look up pictures.

Hokay, I'm back:

-Fair point re: dragons' usual role (and thus scarcity) in fantasy gaming/literature...which for all its supposed whimsy & imagination seems to be far too reliant upon type-casting by appearance/race/hue at times. Can't say I've stumbled across enough albino characters to generalize about their alignments...the last one I recall was that groundskeeper from The Princess Bride who got his memory jogged by Andre the Giant.

-Actually, my info was a bit off on lions: both genders sport one small spine (formed by the last two vertebrae fusing) concealed by the tail-tuft; the function of said oddity is still debated.

Dragon 'arrows' could certainly be multifunctional, with an emphasis on display & defense/offense for "earth" types. Didn't the Everfree dragon sprout a bunch of tail-spines just before blowing his/her stack in Spike & Twilight's general direction?

-Again, fair point about avian drumsticks & minotaur(s). Randomly enough, now I'm wondering if mino-cows bother with udder-concealing garments.

-Indeed, magic certainly enables otherwise impossible hybridization...although offhand, generally-related taxa (like, say, dragon/hydra) should still have an easier time producing viable offspring.

-The maternal factor makes sense, though I'm warped enough to get a chuckle outta dialogue such as the following:

"Congratulations! Is it a filly or colt?"
"Results were...eheh...inconclusive."
"What's THAT supposed to mean?"
"At the moment, THEY appear to be a clutch."

Think nothing of it, sir...I, for one, have likely never been on kilter enough to call anyone out in that regard. Life just works that way now & again. Plus, color me very curious about this new monstrosity with that sort of design basis. I'll be back with a response to your, well, responses soon enough.

alwaays one for lore.

i myself asumed the "luna gaurd" to be a differnt sepice of equine i personly call them "bat ponys". and that to refect this they are "sun shy" and are able to speack in ultra sonic.

also intersting idea on adult (fro loyatiy) form.

JBerg18 In reply to LTblackcoat [2012-05-21 22:12:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank You.

They are pretty commonly called bat-ponies, and I do love the work people have done with them. [link] 's Woona tumblr has them as bat ponies, for example.

Thankfully, they were only shown in one or two clips and we can play with their characters for a wile.

most wellcome.

as a fan i have already make much lore and play to "play" with them in a still on drawing board fan fic. (of course as a good fan i will aknowage the canon over my own work but will still persist with my own ideas.)

i see i am not the only person to use the term or even think of drawing (let alone draw) them.

As a dragon i can say that it is strongly possible that draco-ponies to be part of the the night guard . and to be honest they could be considered demi-alacorns Dragons have magic and often wings. as well as night vision hence the eyes. also dragon scales are made of hairs that are clomped in to scales by natural oils in there skin so the fur on a draco-pony is like a extra layer of armor on them. maybe even having some scaling. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a hole division of Draco-ponies in the guard.

(fyi spike is still a juvenile and his wings might grow in at adolescents so he may still get wings for dragons adolescents is 25 to 30s spike is only around 8 to 10 also the greed form was not truly growing up but size increasing so no one should take that as how spike looks as a adult.)

If they want a magic dragon, do they lend it to the ponies or some of them were hatched by the dragons themselves (magic)?
