Description
Continuing on my little Animorphs nostalgia trip, I started thinking about the extremely short-lived TV series adaptation that aired on Nickelodeon in the late ‘90s. Even when I was 11 years old, I could tell that show sucked. Zero budget, terrible acting, and I don’t think the Animorphs even accomplished anything before series’ end. Surely, with enough money and a bigger format, somebody out there could adapt these books for the screen better than that.As it so often happens, my mind gravitated back to my love of cinematic storytelling, and I started kicking around ideas for what a theatrical Animorphs movie might be like. Movies based on YA novels are big juju these days, so I think if this series was ever gonna make a comeback, this’d be the way to do it. I think a trilogy would suit this story well – cut out all the goofy pointless filler about semi-sentient buffalo and evil starfish twins and instant maple-ginger oatmeal and just get to the interesting stuff.
In the first movie, you could probably combine all the important plot elements from the first five books into one coherent two-hour story – Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco meet Elfangor and gain their morphing powers, uncover the Yeerk pool underneath the school, and learn the hard way that this war is going to be a tough fight if they have to do it alone. Ax signals them from his sunken dome ship off the coast, so they team up with him, but get caught by Visser Three, and while they’re in his clutches, they learn that Visser One is using Marco’s mom for a host body. Naturally, they have to fight their way out, with Ax at their side. All the while, Tobias is learning to deal with his fate after getting stuck in his hawk morph, and what that means for him and his budding relationship with Rachel.
I don’t know about you, but I’d watch it. And I think even if you’d never read the books before, this movie could still be a fine introduction to these characters and the concept.

I personally don't think this would give a movie series. Even without having read the last half of the series, I can tell they would impossibly could put all important details on the cosmos and such into a trilogy, unless it's gonna be a mess like The Hobbit.
But I could imagine it as an animated series. With at least one or two books chapped together, you probably could package it into three seasons.

I'll tell you what...I was a huge fan of these books. I still have a complete collection of the main series and most of the side books. Damn did I love these books. I also watched the first season of the show but like you said...the show was crap. They had a second season but I didn't watch it. My memories of the show are pretty fuzzy.
I think a movie would be pretty dang cool. I mean with all of the YA stuff getting adapted out there why not bring back the Animorphs?

I imagine an animated series looking more like X-men Evo, but this might just do: personality plus!

You do have a way with storytelling. If you were in charge of production, it could lead to a revival.

That's actually an interesting idea. Have the first movie cover setting up the status quo, the second movie could cover something like the David trilogy or the Chee arc or the Hork-Bajir colony or the Yeerk Peace Movement or something dealing with gaining allies, then the third movie could be the final days of the war.
I've been thinking about it lately and was thinking it would do better to be adapted in a format of "Hour-Long" episodes. That way you could cut out a lot of the chaff, while not losing a lot of the world building and some of the more fun books that don't necessarily fit into the war arc tightly.

Nice idea there.
I actually have myself been thinking of this crossover between Animorphs and a video game called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
Its basically an origin story of sorts for the popular X-COM game set in the 1960's US where a far greater danger then that of the USSR is lurking in the air, namely that of an alien invasion.
Anyway, the crossover would be that one young man's granddad turns out to have been a member of the Bureau, or the Bureau of Operations which is its full name, and after learning about the protagonists' and their struggle against the Yeerk, he is given by his granddad the very same devices that he used during his time as an Agent in the Bureau.

I knew this book series existed back in the 90's, but I guess I never really got into it. I was really the Goosebumps and Magic School Bus guy as a kid.

Neat.
Okay, who would you get to play the main characters, along with the sixth member of the gang? You know who I'm talking about.

I can't say for sure, since I don't know much about today's kid actors. Probably the best thing to do would be to go with a cast of newcomers, like the Harry Potter movies did. Kids in the 12-to-14 range who actually know how to act.
Not like the TV show, where they had college kids playing middle schoolers. The guy who played Tobias was 22, for god's sake.

I don't remember if Ax is supposed to be a bit older than the other kids or not, but I think if I was doing an animated thing of Animorphs, he'd be the only one voiced by a name actor/LA-Voice-Actor-guy.

If I remember right, Ax was the Andalite equivalent of a young teenager, so yeah, round about everyone else's age.

True. Even so, he acted a lot older than the others, being a young soldier, and trying to cling to being the Ideal Andalite in the face of his new situation and seeing that the Andalites ain't so admirable as he once thought. He was kinda like a junior Worf in that respect, to borrow one of K.A.'s favorite things as a metaphor.

Just let Greg Wiesman produce an animated series, Young Justice is a terrific cartoon, you probably wont like it because it's "too dark" but its friggen cool

I didn't like Young Justice either, but for a slightly different reason. In that show, Greg Weisman succumbed to what I call "nWo Syndrome": As he kept building up the Light and the Reach as threats, he lost track of the simple fact that sooner or later, they have to lose.

Greg Weisman is a pretentious bore. In both Gargolyes and Young Justice, he creates characters that have zero interesting characteristics, rambles on and on with exposition and plots that go nowhere, and makes the villains so unbeatable and perfect that you have to ask yourself why the heroes are even bothering to do anything against them.
The only show he actually remembered to have fun in was Spectacular Spider-Man, and I'm sure it was because the fast-paced nature of Spidey and his world meant that Marvel was on his ass at all times to make sure he didn't try to turn it into another one of his ego-strokes.

He was head booker for WCW in the mid-to-late '90's. It was him who wrote the infamous nWo storyline where Hulk Hogan turned Hollywood and Sting turned into the Crow.

Well, the nWo was supposed to be a slow-burn story, but along the way, the wrestlers playing the bad guys turned out to be buddies with Bischoff and the other writers, so we never got that big payoff where the nWo were run out of town by the good guys. That's a bit different, but it's the same point: People get bored and frustrated when the villains don't get their comeuppance.

Yeah, a THIRD villain who never ever loses and makes the heroes look like chumps.
I get that the nature of a serialized superhero show is that they've always gotta play defense, but I don't think they EVER really beat anybody in Young Justice. The Reach won every fight, and every time the heroes did anything, it just played into the Light's hands. I think Greg Weisman got a bit too high up on himself in this one.
